Just under a year after it was announced that Gina Rodriguez was lending her voice to the iconic character Carmen Sandiego for a new Netflix animated series, the actress has also signed on to play the thief in a new Netflix live-action movie. The animated series will debut in 2019, with Netflix also obtaining the feature film rights to the franchise, with Gina Rodriguez also serving as a producer with Kevin Misher, through his Misher Films company. No writer or director is attached at this time, and no production schedule or release date has been issued quite yet.

The franchise is owned by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, with Caroline Fraser from HMH Productions also serving as an executive producer of both the live-action movie and the animated TV series. HMH will also be publishing a new series of books that will be timed to the release of the Carmen Sandiego animated series in 2019, although it isn't clear if the streaming service is eyeing a 2019 release for the live-action film as well. The movie is said to be a "standalone adventure that will embrace the beloved 90s property," although no specific plot details were given.

There is also no indication yet if Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), who was announced last year to voice Player in the Carmen Sandiego animated TV series, will also reprise his role as Player, who was described last year as, "Carmen's chief accomplice and friend." The animated series will feature brand new international capers that will provide an, "intimate look into Carmen's past where viewers will not only follow her escapades but also learn WHO in the world is Carmen Sandiego and WHY she became a super thief." There is no indication as to whether or not the movie's plot will be connected to the animated series or not.

The Carmen Sandiego franchise kicked off with the 1985 release of Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego, an educational video game by Broderbund which spawned a successful series of games. The player is a new detective for the Acme Detective Agency, who are tracking down Carmen Sandiego and evil organization Villains' International League of Evil (V.I.L.E.), working their way up the ranks of Acme solving cases involving Carmen Sandiego's team of thieves, before eventually working cases involving Carmen Sandiego herself.

The video game, which was first released on the Apple II computers, was a huge hit and became a staple in classrooms around the world. The original game spawned several follow-ups including Where In the U.S.A. Is Carmen Sandiego?, Where In Europe Is Carmen Sandiego?, Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego?, Where In America's Past Is Carmen Sandiego? and Where In Space Is Carmen Sandiego?, to name just a few. There were also a number of TV shows, books, comic books and board games that were released. Gina Rodriguez most recently starred on the big screen in Annihilation, and she is also lending her voice to the animated movie Smallfoot and also stars in the upcoming remake of Miss Bala. Deadline broke the news on this casting earlier today.
