The latest movie to get the remake treatment is Cheaper by the Dozen, and Walt Disney Studios has released a trailer for the new film. Scheduled to start streaming on March 18, Cheaper by the Dozen stars Gabrielle Union and Zach Braff as a couple whose family grows exponentially once the two tie the knot. You can watch the new trailer below.

Disney describes the new Cheaper by the Dozen as a "glimpse at the funny and heartwarming story of the raucous exploits of a blended family of 12, the Bakers, as they navigate a hectic home life while simultaneously managing their family business." This new take is written by Kenya Barris and Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry with Gail Lerner directing. It is based on the original 1948 novel of the same name by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and his sister Ernestine Gilbreth Carey and is partly based on their real-life family.

Along with Zach Braff, those playing the rest of the Baker family in the film are Journee Brown, Kylie Rogers, Andre Robinson, Caylee Blosenski, Aryan Simhaldri, Leo A. Perry, Mykal-Michelle Harris, Christian Cote, Sebastian Cote, and Luke Prael. Erika Christensen, Brittany Daniel, Cynthia Daniel, and Ron Funches also star.

Cheaper by the Dozen Has Inspired Many Movies

The original movie to be developed based on the 1948 novel was 1950's Cheaper by the Dozen. That movie was written by Lamar Trotti and directed by Walter Lang with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy tarring as the parents. The story has also been adapted as a stage play and as a musical.

Perhaps the most famous version of Cheaper by the Dozen is the 2003 film led by Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. By this point, many liberties were taken with the story to where it bore little in common with the original beyond following a family with 12 children. The film was a success and brought about the 2005 sequel Cheaper by the Dozen 2. Tom Welling, who appeared in those two movies, had hoped that a third installment of the series would get made before the decision was made to reboot Cheaper by the Dozen.

“I’d love to do a third one,” Welling told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in 2020. “It would be fun to have [my character], Charlie Baker, having his first child and thinking he’s got it all figured out because he’s had so many siblings. Of course, things may not go that way. I think that’d be funny but I don’t know where that project sits or what they’re doing with it. Cheaper by the Dozen 3.0 or something. I don’t know what you’d call it.”

Welling certainly had an interesting idea for the potential Cheaper by the Dozen sequel that didn't get made. While that didn't end up coming to fruition, for better or for worse, the cast still ended up getting together for a virtual reunion in May 2020. Maybe that's the closest we'll ever come to Cheaper by the Dozen 3.

Cheaper by the Dozen will start streaming on Disney+ on March 18, 2022.
