Casper The Friendly Ghost might be making a return to the silver screen for a new live-action project from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment. It would be the first theatrical endeavor featuring the amicable specter since Casper debuted in the summer of 1995.

Classic Media owns the rights to the Harvey Comics character, and they will team up with Universal and Amblin for this new comedic adventure. The reboot will feature a mixture of live-action and CGI elements, much like the original feature length Casper starring Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci. Shooting in 3D has also been discussed, although it's not a certainty at this point.

No story details were given, although a comic book entitled Casper and the Spectrals was published last year, which could serve as a basis for this new on-screen endeavor. The updated series follows Casper and his ghost friends Wendy the Witch and Hot Stuff as they team up to fight the evil ghosts of Spooky Town, a city within New York City that is unseen by the human eye.

No writer or director is attached at this time.
