Cats has undergone another CGI update. The big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical is sending out a new and improved cut of the movie to theaters now. When the first Cats trailer debuted over the summer, people weren't sure what to think about it after getting a peek at the rather creepy CGI version of cat people. However, the studio went back to the drawing board and did a design overhaul in time for the second trailer release, only to go back again, after the movie was released on Friday, for another redesign.

It's no secret that Cats director Tom Hooper was still working on the CGI right before the premiere earlier this week. The troubled movie was only able to bring in a little over $6 million in its debut weekend with an initial budget of $100 million before advertising, but Hooper hopes to fix that with "some improved visual effects." The runtime will remain the same, with the only change being some aesthetics that viewers have complained about over the last few days.

This is an unprecedented move by a studio to get viewers into theaters. Sonic the Hedgehog went through a massive redesign and had its release date pushed back in the process. Cats has already debuted in theaters and most chains are receiving their new cut of the movie today via download link. Theaters without the download link are having physical copies sent out, which are supposed to arrive no later than Tuesday. Obviously, this isn't a surefire way to get viewers back into theaters to check out the troubled movie.

While the visual effects have been trashed by viewers, it's really the story that has been getting to people who are fans of the Broadway musical. Cats has been torn apart by both viewers and critics for various reasons over the past week and one can't really see some redesigns helping matters, though the studio is going to try their hardest to get people in to see the movie, even if that means going through more redesign work on a movie that is already complete. It will be interesting to see if the redesign news spreads and gets more people in theaters to check it out.

Cats is currently in theaters with the original cut, though the studio has demanded that the new cut be swapped in immediately. Regardless, some CGI tweaks more than likely aren't going to save the movie at the box office, though the upcoming holidays may prove to be a boost. As for now, The Rise of Skywalker and Jumanji: The Next Level are dominating the box office and they show no signs of slowing down to give Cats a shot at the top. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to announce the new version of Cats with digital edits hitting theaters this weekend and next week.
