According to a report from Variety, CBS has announced that it has renewed all three shows in its NCIS franchise for the fall season. NCIS will enter its 20th season in the fall NCIS: Los Angeles will enter its 14th while NCIS: Hawai’i will have just its second season this fall. All three series have been ratings successes for CBS, so it’s no surprise that all three have been renewed.

When announcing the renewals, Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment said, “NCIS, one of the most popular and enduring series in the world, and fan favorite NCIS: Los Angeles have been hugely successful on the CBS schedule for years. With the strong new addition of NCIS: Hawai’i, we are able to expand the strength of this formidable franchise across our schedule. We couldn’t be more excited to have all three talented casts and creative teams back to bring more compelling NCIS stories to viewers in the U.S. and around the globe.”

There’s some concern about what the cast for NCIS will look like in the fall, as Wilmer Valderrama is rumored to be leaving the show as he has a new show on Disney+ starting soon. And there are rumors that Mark Harmon may be returning to NCIS. Although there have been no confirmed casting changes for NCIS, it will be interesting to see what the cast will look like in the fall.

NCIS Has Been a Long-term Winner for CBS

The NCIS franchise spun off from the show JAG after a two-episode backdoor pilot aired during the eighth season of JAG. While not all of the characters who appeared in the backdoor pilot made it to NCIS when NCIS premiered the following fall, it quickly became one of CBS’s most-watched shows. Mark Harmon, the series lead for NCIS for 18 years, did appear in that backdoor pilot and has served as an executive producer for NCIS since the show began.

While there have been many cases of cast members leaving the show and new cast members joining, ratings for NCIS have remained strong for the entire course of the series, making renewing the show an easy choice for CBS year in and year out. Rumors of characters that have previously left the franchise possibly returning have been swirling recently with many people believing that Michael Weatherly, who played Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on NCIS, might be in the new NCIS: Sydney show that is set to air on Paramount+ in Australia. This has not been confirmed, however, Weatherly is currently free from obligations as his show Bull has ended. Many fans would love to see DiNozzo return to the NCIS franchise and Weatherly has teased that possibility, although again there has been no confirmation.

Mark Harmon, who left NCIS during the 19th season, is also rumored to be returning to the NCIS franchise. When he left as an actor, he stayed on as a producer and all involved had said that there was always the possibility that he could return at any time. These casting rumors are just that. Rumors. They should not be taken as casting decisions until final confirmation comes from CBS. Regardless of who will be on the shows in the fall, there will be more NCIS on our screens for the 2022 TV season.
