According to Charlie Cox, Andrew Garfield has secured his legacy as “the third greatest Spider-Man of all time.” Cox’s jokey roast was made as he introduced his long-time friend Garfield to the stage at the GQ Men of the Year event. While toasting and gently roasting Garfield, Cox also called him “One of, if not the greatest actor of our generation,” as he paid tribute to the actor’s “sickeningly good year.”

Of course, Cox has been friends long enough with Garfield to know that he can be pretty merciless in his jibes, and while he mused on whether there was an end to Garfield’s talent. Cox said:

“A couple of years ago I was having a conversation with a friend of mine bemoaning the seemingly limitless talents of our friend, and the final man of the year tonight, Mr Andrew Garfield. I said ‘it’s really annoying, is there nothing he can’t do?'”

It seems that the answer to that is a definite no, especially when Cox recalled an old drama school audition where Garfield clearly couldn’t sing, and how he believed Garfield could have bitten off more than he could chew when taking on his lead role in Tick, Tick…Boom!. That role turned out to be just another high point of Garfield’s career.

Why Andrew Garfield Is Glad Amazing Spider-Man 3 Didn't Happen

Andrew Garfield’s return as Peter Parker in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home allowed him to play a part in one of the biggest movies of all time. While it could have been a nerve-racking time, returning as one of the most iconic superheroes in what was always going to be a big deal event, Garfield said that he didn’t feel quite that much pressure. He said:

“[No Way Home] was really just kind of beautiful. I got to treat it like a short film about Spider-Man with buddies. The pressure was off me. You have three people who feel real ownership over this character. But it was really, like, brotherhood first.”

Of course, Charlie Cox also appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, making his MCU debut as Matt Murdock ahead of his larger role in She-Hulk, and his upcoming solo series, Daredevil: Born Again. While Cox’s MCU journey is only just beginning, Garfield’s future in the MCU is probably already over. There are certainly plenty of fans who would be happy to see Garfield pulling on his Spidey-suit again, but it could be something that will happen in animated form rather live-action.

Recently it was hinted that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) could see many Spider-Man variants coming together, with Garfield and Tobey Maguire providing the voices of two of them. It has not been confirmed whether this is the case, but it would not be surprising for Sony to want to bring two of their biggest Spider-Man assets out for another run at the character. I mean, who would’t want to see “the third greatest Spider-Man of all time” doing his thing again, in whatever format?
