Cormac McCarthy's best selling novel The Road has been picked up by 2929 Entertainment for a big screen adaptation. According to Variety, Charlize Theron has joined the cast along with Viggo Mortensen.

The film will revolve around a man that embarks on a hellish road trip with his son after a nuclear explosion. He must fend off cannibals in order to find a safe resting ground. John Hillcoat will direct the screenplay adapted by Joe Penhall.

Theron will play the small part of Mortensen's wife, who is only seen in flashbacks. Though she doesn't get much screen time, Theron says she took the part because she is a big fan of the book. The film begins shooting next month.
