Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy “Chong” first met in the 1960s, bonding over their love for improvisational comedy. The two have performed a variety of stand-up comedy shows together, even successfully releasing their own comedy record albums. The duo’s success with their comedy routines led to them releasing their first feature-length film, Up in Smoke. Despite the low budget, the film was pretty successful at the box office and provided the foundation for the sequels to come. Cheech & Chong's films were mostly based on the hippie era, with a particular focus on stoner culture and the various counter-culture movements that rose during the '80s and '90s. Here are some of the funniest moments from the Cheech & Chong Franchise, ranked:

8 Gym Shoot - Get Out of My Room (1985)

Get Out of My Room
MCA Records
Warner Bros. Records
WEA

Get Out of My Room is an album by Cheech and Chong but also has a short-form video featuring the comedic duo. Released in 1985, it marked the last release by the duo for a while as Cheech wanted to focus on his mainstream acting career. The album has a total of fourteen tracks, seven on each side. The video for the album is presented in a mockumentary style, with Cheech and Chong overworked while attempting to film the video album for Get Out of My Room. Cheech portrays Ian Rotten, an egoistic control freak, who leads a British punk rock album, while Chong portrays The Man, the group’s American drummer.

A particularly funny moment in the film is when the duo is trying to film the video for Get Out of My Room in a gym that they’ve rented. It’s hilarious to see Cheech trying to get basketball players to leave the room, so they can film, all the while Chong looks like he’s about to fall asleep while standing.

7 Dave's not Here! - Cheech & Chong's Animated Movie (2013)

Cheech & Chong's Animated Movie
20th Century Studios

The comedic duo returned to screens in 2013 with the adult animated comedy film, Cheech & Chong’s Animated Movie. Their first feature film since 1984 follows the two through a variety of adventures, many of which were reminiscent of their earlier films. The humor in the film is absolutely gold and will have the audience laughing with tears running down their faces. One particularly memorable scene from the film is the one that involves the duo’s iconic line “Dave’s not here!”. In the scene, Cheech knocks on Chong’s door, while holding marijuana. He keeps knocking on the door, using the code word 'Dave', to tell Chong to open the door since there are cops patrolling the area. Unfortunately, Cheech’s urgent tone does not get to Chong, who is busy looking for something and keeps telling Cheech that “Dave’s not here!” The whole scene is quite hilarious.

6 Drunken Love - Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers (1984)

Cheech & Chong's The Corsican Brothers
Orion Pictures

Adapted from Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 novella, The Corsican Brothers, Cheech & Chong’s The Corsican Brothers sees the comedic duo playing twin brothers. Interestingly, this is the only film in the whole franchise that does not heavily center around stoner comedy. As narrated by a mysterious gypsy, the movie follows the life of two twin brothers who were separated at birth but could feel each other’s pain and pleasure. When the pair reunites, their misguided adventures somehow trigger the start of the French Revolution.

One of the funniest scenes in the movie occurs when Chong finds himself drunk. In his drunken state, he tells Cheech that he’s glad that the two are brothers and that he loves him. It’s a rather wholesome moment. Until Chong discovers a handkerchief that belongs to the woman he’s besotted with. The same woman who claims to be in love with Cheech. This leads to a rather hilarious argument between the two, as Chong, while slurring over his words, declares the mysterious beauty as his woman. The argument ends with Chong punching Cheech only to hold his own face as he can feel the pain of his twin brother.

5 Press Conference in Amsterdam - Still Smokin (1983)

Still Smokin
Paramount Pictures

Directed by Tommy Chong, Still Smokin is a wraparound story that finds the comedic duo in Amsterdam for a film festival. When it first premiered, the film received negative reception but has gathered quite a cult following in recent years. One of the funniest scenes happens during a press conference in Amsterdam. Both Cheech and Chong are hung over and half asleep when the two stumble into the conference room. While Cheech gives absurd answers to the journalists (such as ET coming to the conference) Chong dozes off midway and dreams up a completely different conference where the two are famous. In his dreams, the journalists and reporters complement the two and say that they’re huge fans. The scene is absurd yet hilarious in the way that most of Cheech & Chong’s works are.

4 Kill the Datsun - Things Are Tough All Over (1982)

Things Are Tough All Over
Columbia Pictures

Directed by Thomas K. Avildsen, Things Are Tough All Over follows the adventures of the comedic duo as they drive a limo from Chicago to Las Vegas. What the duo is unaware of is that the owners of the limo have stashed millions in the seat of the car and soon find themselves being chased by two wealthy Arabs. Some of the most amusing scenes in the movie revolve around the Arab characters that are also portrayed by Cheech and Chong. In one particular scene, Mr. Slyman (Cheech) has to stop Prince Habib (Chong) from killing a salesman just because he expected the Prince to drive a Datsun. Later on, Prince Habib tries to stab the car with his knife simply because the heating is turned on instead of the AC. The audience can’t help but laugh as Mr. Slyman tries to stop the Prince again, only for the two to drive past the hippie duo they were chasing.

3 Trapped in an Insane Asylum - Nice Dreams (1981)

Nice Dreams
Columbia Pictures

In Nice Dreams, the comedic duo hit big by selling cannabis out of an ice cream truck. The two have gotten rich and have managed to evade the Drug Enforcement Administration. Things get a little crazy for the duo when they discover a marijuana strand that turns people into lizards. It wouldn’t be a Cheech & Chong film if there isn’t any absurdity in it, now, would it? One of the most memorable scenes from the film happens when the duo find themselves in a mental institution. As they try to locate the man to whom they accidentally handed a check, the two get dragged into the institution. Cheech even gets locked and tied up for starting a fight.

2 Chaotic Neighbor - Cheech & Chong's Next Movie (1980)

Cheech & Chong's Next Movie
Universal Pictures

Cheech & Chong's Next Movie is the second installment in the franchise. It finds the two stoners tearing through Los Angeles in hopes of earning a new income after Cheech loses his job. It’s absolutely hilarious to see Cheech and Chong wreak havoc on their neighbor. Most of the scenes where the duo is causing some misfortune or the other for their neighbor are quite funny. For instance, when Chong sneakingly takes his neighbor's car for a ride and completely destroys it. Or when he rides a bike inside his house and destroys his neighbor's garden with all the smoke. It’s hard to forget Chong playing his guitar loudly as everyone in the neighborhood seeks shelter from the horrible noise.

1 High on the Road - Up in Smoke (1978)

Up in Smoke
Paramount Pictures

Up in Smoke was the movie that started it all; it provided the foundation onto which an empire of sequels was built. The movie follows the duo through their misadventures around the city and as they compete in a rock band contest. One of the funniest scenes shows the two stoned as Chong accidentally gives Chong the wrong drugs and is completely out of their senses. As the cops pull up behind the two, Chong eats all the other pills in an attempt to hide the drugs. The scene is hilarious as Cheech can’t stop laughing despite the police officer standing right outside. The scene concludes with Chong choking on one of the pills and then throwing up on Cheech.
