As we all know by this point in time, MGM and the director of the still unreleased teen horror flick Polaroid have a new take on Tom Holland and Don Mancini's classic killer doll flick Child's Play headed our way next summer. We're all excited about the upcoming remake, if not a bit hesitant about its existence, and so if you feel the same, maybe today's news will help smooth matters out a bit more. We've learned that MGM has snagged MasterFX to handle "doll duties" on the new version, and they are using on-set puppetry to bring this new Chucky to life!

Emmy Award-winning character FX studio MastersFX known for their work on such flicks as The Predator, Sinister, and RoboCop will bring to life the contemporary version of the iconic Good Guys doll, which will now be going by the name, the BUDDI doll. MastersFX will bring the new Chucky doll to life on screen with a mixture of practical on-set puppet work and digital FX enhancements. That's right, they're using animatronics NOT a full CGI doll.

Producer David Katzenberg (IT) says.

"It was important to [director Lars Klevberg] that we use animatronics as much as possible. As fans of [MastersFX founder Todd Masters] work, we were thrilled when he and his team of exceptional artists and puppeteers agreed to take on the challenge of creating our take on a classic character."

Evidently, seven practical animatronic puppets were assembled for use in the film, each with interchangeable arms and heads that perform a variety of required actions on set. The FX team each controlled a different part of the doll, led by ace puppeteer Keith Arbuthnot, along with Mike Fields, Jason Ward, and Josh Raymond. Overall, it took Masters and his team six weeks to prepare the dolls.

Masters says this.

"Reconceiving a well-loved classic always feels like wading into tricky waters, however, Lars' fresh vision for this film turned what could have been a challenging process into a seamless and beautiful collaboration. MGM and Orion's Child's Play is not a remake or retelling but a completely new style and concept and we believe that BUDDI fits with this vision perfectly."

This new version follows this ridiculously simple synopsis.

Child's Play, a contemporary version of the iconic horror classic, follows a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature.

Child's Play is directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) from a screenplay written by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury, Quantum Break) and stars Aubrey Plaza (Ingrid Goes West, Legion, Safety Not Guaranteed) as Karen, Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta, Widows, If Beale Street Could Talk) as Mike, and Gabriel Bateman (Lights Out, American Gothic) as Andy. Child's Play is produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith (It, It: Chapter Two) under their KatzSmith Productions banner, with Aaron Schmidt and Chris Ferguson executive producing. Orion Pictures will release Child's Play in theaters nationwide on June 21, 2019. This news comes direct from MGM.com.
