As many of you might know well and good by this point in time, the world of Chucky and his Child's Play franchise are kind of all over the place at the moment. Not only does MGM have a remake of Tom Holland's original film in the works from Polaroid director Lars Klevberg starring Gabriel Bateman, Aubrey Plaza, and Brian Tyree Henry, but the original film's creator Don Mancini has the Child's Play TV Show on the way as well.

Speaking of Don Mancini (who has written every entry thus far in the Child's Play/Chucky series, and directed the last three films), recently we passed along the news that Mancini isn't happy with MGM's upcoming remake. Like, at all. But considering that the man has no control over what MGM is doing with millions of dollars of Chucky money, Mancini is being a good sport about the whole thing. And instead of crying over spilled, evil, and possessed milk, Mancini is pushing ever-forward and keeping his focus on the upcoming TV series he's working on with franchise producer David Kirschner.

So in the midst of all this confusion, how is Child's Play: The TV Series coming along? Well, Mancini was recently a guest on the must-subscribe horror fan podcast Post Mortem with Mick Garris and the writer-director, from the sounds of it, is happy with the show's current direction. Not only that, but he seems genuinely excited to delve into all the hours of storytelling that a long-form TV series will provide him and his team. Specifically, he says this.

"...we're gonna be able to explore different avenues, with different characters, that are among fan favorites. You know, a lot of times people will say, 'I'd love to see... what's Tiffany's backstory? And what about Glen and Glenda?' All these different avenues. Now we have a way of exploring all of this, and that's really exciting."

Tiffany's backstory, you say? More Glen and Glenda you tease? Please, Mancini, get this series off the ground and into my TV set by Christmas. It would make my year! All jokes aside, Mancini continued, saying this.

"From having worked on Hannibal and Channel Zero, I just really enjoyed it, and I saw an opportunity to reinvent the franchise yet again. We've reinvented it in different ways, by making it a comedy and then back to horror... but the sheer storytelling real estate that doing 8-to-10 episodes gives us will allow us to delve into characters and relationships in a way that we're never afforded in just a 90-minute movie. That's really exciting to me."

And finally, this.

"But I'm also excited about inviting new voices into the process. I am really excited about inviting other very talented writers and seeing what they'll bring into it."

Maybe at first you were like me and thought that the idea of a TV series based on Chucky, his bride, his seed, and all their buddies was possibly not the best way to go with the future of the franchise. But more and more as I think about it, a long-form 8-10 episode multiple season series may be the ONLY way Mancini could continue his specific storylines. After all, if you saw Mancini's most recent Chucky flick Cult of Chucky you know things got, to be frank, utterly batsh*t crazy by the time credits rolled. I'm all for this series. Bring it on, I say. The sooner the better! Thanks to Post Mortem with Mick Garris for the update.
