When it comes to taking over the mantle of Captain America, Anthony Mackie has the daunting task of taking over from long-time Cap Chris Evans, who played the role of Steve Rogers throughout the MCU. When Evans stepped away from the role in the culmination of the Infinity Saga, it was clear that a new Captain America would be coming. That seemed to be Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, but it took the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to see the character become the new Captain America. Now he will star in his own movie, and that is something Chris Evans cannot wait to see.

Like many long-running franchises, there comes a time when there has to be a change of personnel, and after a decade of playing the First Avenger, Evans decided that Endgame was the right time to bow out. While he has not entirely ruled out returning to the role in some capacity in the right circumstances, Evans is hugely supportive of Mackie’s new take on the role of Captain America and feels he is more than up to the job. He told Yahoo!:

"There's no one better to do it. I mean, he honestly does it justice. I'm so proud of him. I can't wait to see what they do in the future with it. But if there's any tear shed [about the role], it's just for the sweet memories I had."

Captain America 4 is in Development Now

Following the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it became quickly apparent that Sam Wilson’s story was not going to end there, and although there is not an “Avengers level” movie announced yet, there is little doubt that Mackie’s new Captain America will be a big part of it. For now though, he is going to get his first big-screen outing in his own solo movie, and long-time Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore previously spoke about what Mackie can bring to the character in the future.

"I think, he's not Steve Rogers and I think that's a good thing. Because to me, this new Cap is Rocky. He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier. He's not a hundred years old. He doesn't have the Avengers. What happens with this guy who announces publicly kind of, without the support, 'I'm new Captain America.' What happens next? I think is fascinating because he's a guy. He's a guy with wings and a shield, but he is a guy. So, we're going to put him through the wringer and make him earn it, and see what happens when he is outweighed, outclassed, out-everything. What makes somebody Captain America? I'm going to argue it's not being a super soldier. And I think we're going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson."

Like many of the future MCU releases beyond next summer, there is no date currently set for Captain America 4, but with big announcements said to be coming from Disney Expo in September, we could find more about the upcoming slate of Marvel movies then.
