Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have worked with Captain America actor Chris Evans multiple times throughout their MCU run. But, while Evans quickly emerged as the pitch perfect choice for the straight-laced Steve Rogers, there is another Marvel hero that the Russo Brothers believe Evans could have nailed – none other than Wolverine. Asked by Comicbook.com which character they think Evans could portray well should he brought back for some multiversal madness, Joe Russo quickly replied...

“Wolverine.”

Anthony Russo just as quickly agreed, with Joe going on to heap praise on Evans as a performer and explaining to the dubious among us why he thinks the Captain America star could have nailed playing the fan-favorite member of the X-Men.

"Evans has incredible range and great physicality, and he's real good at body control. He's an incredible actor. I don't mean this in a bad way, but he's nothing like Captain America. Steve Rogers is very controlled and quiet, understated. Chris is energetic and funny and charismatic, and he brings a lot of energy to set. I'd love to see him do something like Wolverine."

Evans is indeed an incredibly gifted actor, as he has proven time and again with performances across the MCU as well as in the likes of Sunshine, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Iceman, Snowpiercer, Knives Out and more. There is no doubt that, despite portraying the stoic nobility of Steve Rogers so well, that he couldn’t have just as good a job with the tortured, rage-fueled Wolverine. Alas, twas not meant to be.

Currently, we do not know what Marvel Studios plans to do with Wolverine. But, following the reintroduction of Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the studio are clearly laying the foundations for bringing the mutants into the MCU. As for who will play Wolverine once he does return to the big screen, fans have several ideas, including Scott Eastwood, Jared Keeso, and, of course, Danny DeVito.

While it’s highly unlikely (meaning never) that audiences will ever see Chris Evans wield adamantium claws as Wolverine, the actor is due to play am alarmingly different character in the upcoming spy thriller The Gray Man.

The Gray Man sees Evans reunite with The Russo Brothers and is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. The Gray Man centers on Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), the CIA's most skilled mercenary whose true identity is known to none, who accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets. Soon, he finds himself pursued by Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a psychopathic former colleague, who puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins.

The Gray Man marks the beginning of a new franchise for Chris Evans, with reports already claiming that a prequel centered on his character Lloyd Hansen is already in “the very early stage” alongside a straight-up sequel. With a budget of $200 million, The Gray Man is Netflix’s most expensive movie ever made, with the streaming giant and the Russo’s harboring big plans for a new franchise.

Co-starring Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton alongside Gosling and Evans, The Gray Man is set for a limited release on July 15, 2022, followed by its release on Netflix on July 22, 2022.
