Marvel star Chris Hemsworth has laid down his requirements for reprising the role as Thor, with the actor stating that any potential sequel would need to be “something unique” and avoid doing the same thing again and again. Speaking with the Spanish magazine AccionCine, Hemsworth certainly sounds like he is committed to the story above all else, and suggests that he is disinterested in bringing back the more comedic version of the superhero that has led the likes of Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.

"I have no idea. I've said it before, it all depends on the type of story. It has to be something unique. What I don't want is to do the same with the character until the end, until there is a feeling of exhaustion in the audience. But if there is excitement for it, I am always willing to return. If there is a new story, it has to be something very special. I'm sure there's something exciting to tell, so we'll have to wait and see. You have to wait to find it."

While Hemsworth does not know whether he is due to return to the MCU, it’s worth noting that his character has not had a commemorative goodbye like his fellow Marvel icons Iron Man and Captain America have. It is expected that Hemsworth’s Thor will be back for the upcoming Avengers outings Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, but there has been no official word so far on whether this is the case or whether they will lead to a Thor 5.

Whatever happens, it sounds like Hemsworth is ready to leave the comedic stylings of the Asgardian behind (at least to some extent) and try something different with the Marvel hero.

This is not the first time that Hemsworth has stated his determination to do something different with Thor. “You look at Thor 1 and 2, they were quite similar. Ragnarok and Love and Thunder are similar. I think it’s about reinventing it,” the actor said last year. “I’ve had such a unique opportunity with Infinity War and Endgame to do very drastic things with the character. I enjoy that, I like keeping people on their toes. It keeps me on my toes. It keeps me invested.”

While Thor: Ragnarok stands as one of the highest rated outings in the MCU, Thor: Love and Thunder is now one of the franchise’s lowest, with Hemsworth now more than ready for a change in tone. “I’ve said this before but when it becomes too familiar, I think there’s a risk in getting lazy then because I know what I’m doing,” he continued. “I don’t know if I’m even invited back, but if I was, I think it would have to be a drastically different version in tone, everything, just for my own sanity… [laughs] Thor lost his mind that last one. He’s got to figure it out now.”

Chris Hemsworth is currently busy leading another franchise, Extraction, with the Extraction 2 due to land on Netflix on June 16, 2023.
