Chris Hemsworth began his career on television, appearing on the Australian soap opera Home and Away from 2004-2007. After a brief appearance in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie, he rose to international superstardom playing the titular role in 2011's Thor, which then led to several sequels and multiple MCU-related tie-ins. He has since appeared in several successful films outside the MCU, effectively becoming a household name.

Hemsworth is mostly known for starring in films of the action variety, having taking on lead roles in titles such as Snow White and the Huntsmen, In the Heart of the Sea, Ghostbusters (2016), Men in Black: International, and the Extraction films. Hemsworth has said he will be slowing down the amount of films he makes following the revelation he carries two copies of the gene APOE4, significantly increasing his chances of developing Alzheimer's disease. Hemsworth's health is the primary concern for both him and his fans, but the actor still has plenty of projects in the works, with a few set for release in 2024. Take a look at every upcoming Chris Hemsworth movie we're excited about seeing.

The first of two films Hemsworth is set to star in this year is the highly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker George Miller, the fifth installment in the Mad Max franchise will tell the backstory of the rebellious war captain, Imperator Furiosa, who was first introduced in 2015's Fury Road, in which Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron portrayed her. The Queen's Gambit and The Menu star, Anya Taylor-Joy, is set to take over the role in the upcoming film, which is scheduled to be released in the US on May 24, 2024. Meanwhile, Hemsworth will play the movie's antagonist, the leader of a Biker Horde known as Warlord Dementus. The film's official synopsis looks like this:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Hemsworth Gets to Cut Loose

Upon its release, Mad Max: Fury Road was met with acclaim by both critics and fans of the franchise alike and went on to be nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards. It's widely considered to be one of the best action films in movie history. A prequel film promising the same amount of intense action and high-caliber drama was always going to be met with open arms. With her determined and feisty spirit, heroic nature, and general badass vibe, Imperator Furiosa was easily one of the best aspects of Fury Road, and so a deeper delve into the character's past is a very exciting prospect indeed. What also makes Furiosa something to look forward to is Hemsworth's involvement. The Australian actor is best known for playing superheroes and all-around good guys, so it will be interesting to see him playing against type by portraying the film's main villain.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opens in theaters on May 24, 2024.

Transformers One

Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series
Sunbow Productions

In April 2023, in a move that very few would've predicted, it was announced that Hemsworth would be voicing the character of Optimus Prime in the upcoming animated Transformers movie, Transformers One. Described as a prequel that is "separate and apart" from events portrayed in the live-action series, the film will explore the relationship between the heroic Autobot leader Optimus Prime and the tyrannical chief of the Decepticons, Megatron (who will be voiced by Brian Tyree Henry). Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley has signed on to direct, while other members of the voice cast include Keegan Michael-Key as Bumblebee, Scarlett Johansson as Elita-One, Jon Hamm as Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion.

Hemsworth Is Stepping Into Some Big Shoes

Hemsworth certainly has big shoes to fill when it comes to taking on the role of Optimus Prime. After all, he'll be following in the footsteps of Peter Cullen, the man who voiced the character in the original '80s cartoon, as well as all seven live-action films and related media. Fortunately, Hemsworth has been praised by Transformers One producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who said that the actor is "gonna be a good Optimus Prime".

Aside from Marvel's What If...? anthology series and Thor-related video games, Hemsworth hasn't actually done that much voice work, which makes his inclusion here an even more tantalizing prospect. Add to that a strong supporting cast made up of some of the biggest acting talents, an experienced director, and a focus on a barely-explored era in Transformers lore, and you have all the ingredients for a truly great animated adventure that's worth getting excited about.

Transformers One is scheduled to be released on September 13, 2024.

Extraction 3

Netflix

The first Extraction film dropped on Netflix in 2020 and, after just four weeks of being on the site, was watched by an impressive 99 million households, the site's biggest ever original movie opening. A sequel, Extraction 2, followed in 2023 and proved to be just as popular. It's no surprise then that a third film in the series was announced by the streaming service at the Netflix Tudum festival shortly after the second film had been released. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Andre Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman, and directed by Sam Hargrave, the action films see Hemsworth playing a black ops mercenary by the name of Tyler Rake, who is sent on dangerous missions to rescue the relatives of wealthy people from criminal gangs. Not many details are known about the upcoming third film in the series, apart from the fact that both Hemsworth and Hargrave are set to return, as are the Russo brothers, who served as producers on the first two installments. A release date is yet to be confirmed.

Extraction Is Hemsworth New Franchise

Hemsworth is a born action star, and with the Extraction films, he's managed to find a good fit for himself as an actor beyond his appearances in the MCU. Violent, intense, and over-the-top, these films are unashamedly good, old-fashioned, no-nonsense action movies, making them perfect for watching something that doesn't require too much thinking. The fact that the first two installments have already gotten the formula right means that the third film is an almost guaranteed hit. And with a spin-off film also currently in the works, it seems a whole Extraction cinematic universe is already taking shape.

Untitled Hulk Hogan Biopic

While the other films on this list are far along in the production process, a biopic centering on the life and career of professional wrestler, Hulk Hogan and starring Hemsworth in the lead role has yet to get off the ground. Originally, the movie was announced in February 2019, with Netflix producing and Joker director Todd Phillips attached to direct. However, almost five years later, the film has yet to come to fruition. The latest update on the film came in October 2023, when Hogan himself stated that the deal with Netflix had fallen through owing to issues surrounding the WWE Hall of Famer's life rights. Speaking to the "Inside with Chris Van Vliet" podcast, Hogan cited a business "glitch" as the reason the deal fell through, saying that "Netflix kind of like missed the date, you know, as far as a business situation". While the situation doesn't exactly look promising, Hogan said that he still wanted Hemsworth to play him in a film directed by Phillips but that it would have to be with another production company.

Long In Development Project

Though a Hulk Hogan movie with Hemsworth in the lead role looks less and less likely as time goes by, that doesn't stop it from being an exciting prospect. Hogan is a big and interesting character and is someone who has led a very fruitful and unique life, so the notion of a film about his rise through the wrestling ranks is one that will likely appeal to many people. Furthermore, given the success of fellow wrestling-centric film, The Iron Claw, a Hulk Hogan biopic could prove to be very popular.

What's more, is that Hemsworth is clearly the ideal man for the role. With his buff physique and familiarity with stunt work and fight choreography, thanks to years of playing a superhero, the actor could easily make a convincing WWE wrestler. Combine that with a passing resemblance to a young Hogan and an acting range that rarely gets tapped into, and it's almost impossible to think of anyone else playing the part. The future of the Hulk Hogan biopic is an uncertain one, but it all sounds too good not to happen.

Thor 5?

Thor: Love And Thunder Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, and Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Thor is the character that made Chris Hemsworth a superstar, and the character is a foundational character for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and so too is Chris Hemsworth. While Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Chris Evans's Captain America took their bows in Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth stayed on and returned for Thor: Love and Thunder, making him the first MCU hero to have a fourth film. Yet Thor: Love and Thunder had a more mixed to negative reaction than Thor: Ragnarok, and there are questions on when or even if Hemsworth will return in the part and if Marvel has any plans for Thor 5.

Is Thor 5 Even Happening?

There have been conflicting reports about Thor 5. Marvel Studios has yet to announce the project, yet director Taika Waititi seemingly said Marvel was developing one, but he would not be involved. Hemsworth has also hesitated to comment on the film, saying the franchise might need some reworking if he were to return, likely moving away from the comedy tone of the previous two movies. Hemsworth is still involved with the MCU as he voiced the character in What If...?, but there is a chance he might not return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe until the upcoming Avengers movie, still titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but one that could change in the near future. Whatever happens, fans certainly would not mind seeing Hemsworth as the God of Thunder for at least one more adventure.
