While everyone has their favorite Jurassic Park and Jurassic World dinosaurs, up there near the top of the list for most would be the terrifying Velociraptor. Since their first appearance in the opening sequence of Jurassic Park, the raptors have featured in every movie of the franchise so far, and while Blue and other Velociraptors will appear in Jurassic World: Dominion, there is a new breed to raptor to fear in the sequel: the Atrociraptor. The new dinosaur makes its debut in the third Jurassic World movie, and a new image published in Empire magazine give us a first look as this newer, deadlier breed of Raptor.

Jurassic World: Dominion director Colin Trevorrow was interviewed in the latest edition of Empire magazine and teased the arrival of the new dinosaur breed, which in the new image is hot on the heels of franchise star Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady who is attempting to lure the beast through the streets of Malta on a motorbike. Speaking specifically about the image, Trevorrow commented “and the picture speaks for itself. It’s Chris Pratt being chased by an Atrociraptor. And if they catch up, he’s gonna die, I can tell you that.”

There have been a number of slightly different versions of the raptor across the entire franchise, from the original Jurassic Park and The Lost World versions, through the feathered Jurassic Park III breeds, which were significantly underused in the movie especially in the lackluster finale, and to the hyper-intelligent Blue and the Indoraptor of Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This time though, the Atrociraptor seems to be a whole other ball game when it comes to raptors, as Trevorrow elaborated.

“Where the Velociraptor is a little bit more of a stealth hunter, the Atrociraptors are a bit more brutish. These things will just come at you. And in this particular case, they’ve picked his scent, and they’re not going to stop until he’s dead. They’re pretty brutal. They’re pretty vicious.”

There are probably not many people who would willingly want to be chased by any kind of dinosaur, especially not a breed of raptor, as it has been seen time and time again that they are pretty relentless in their pursuit of their prey. However, in Jurassic World: Dominion, that is exactly what much of the world is facing with dinosaurs roaming the Earth once again, while humans are clearly on the back foot. With the film taking place four years after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, it seems that the world has not adapted well with the action taking place across various parts of the globe, where dinosaur chaos is clearly abundant.

For raptor fans, the Atrociraptor is not the only new breed of speedy beast in the movie, as another lean, mean cousin of the Velociraptor is coming in the form of the Pyroraptor, although Trevorrow teased that he does have soft spot for another new dinosaur called the Moros intrepidus, which the director says “doesn't do a ton in the movie, but whenever it shows up, I always love it.” It sounds like picking out your favorite dinosaur is going to get a lot harder when Jurassic World: Dominion arrives in cinemas on June 10th, 2022.
