Chris Pratt will appear as Peter Quill/Star-Lord for the sixth and possibly final time in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 next summer. Director James Gunn has made it clear that this will be the end of his time in the MCU, and potentially the end of the line for a number of the Guardians team. While there has obviously been no indication of which characters could be killed off and which ones will go on to fight in Secret Wars, Chris Pratt has offered his thoughts on his own character’s future beyond the movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 has suffered a number of delays thanks to the temporary sacking of James Gunn and the Covid pandemic, but finally, everything is coming together to deliver a final chapter in the Guardians saga that Gunn started back in 2014. Although the Guardians movies have never seemed as connected to the wider MCU as others, they have been responsible for revealing the Power Stone, and introducing the idea of Celestials to the franchise, both of which have had big connotations for the narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, the end is nigh, but with another adventure to be had, what the Guardians will bring to the party this time around has yet to be seen.

Pratt spoke to ExtraTV following his appearance at SDCC on Saturday, and although he was vague and evasive enough to not give anything specific away about the fate of Star-Lord, he did offer a get out clause if something bad should happen to the character in the upcoming movie. Pratt said:

“There are no plans for that right now. I think anything is possible, anything is possible. There’s multiverse thing. I’m not saying I am, but if a character gets killed… Actually, turns out there are, like, crazy wormholes to bring people back.”

It has been no secret that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will feature at least one death, if not more, and with stars such as Dave Bautista already confirming that he is going to be leaving the franchise, there is no way of knowing which characters will have a happy ending and which will join the roll-call of the MCU dead.

James Gunn signed off from filming with a message on his Twitter account, discussing the final shot and how the post-production work was laid out ahead. He said:

"After over 100 days of shooting & over 3000 shots, this is the slate for the final shot of #GotGVol3, presented to me by the camera crew. It was an easy shot of Rocket seated, 1st with @seangunn, & then nothing there, & took everything in me not to break down sobbing on the spot. The majority of the last ten years of my life have been spent working on & thinking about the Guardians. I still have a long road ahead of me with VFX & editing, but it was still momentous to me."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released on May 5, 2023.
