Following the surprising success of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, and with Peter Pan about to join the horror genre, another iconic pop culture character brought to fame by Disney is preparing for a terrifying new version. Cinderella, the famous princess, will have her dark remake.

Known as one of the most popular fairy tales in history, the tale of the Grimm brothers has become a legend around the world, with various versions both in animated and live-action format. The most famous, obviously, came in 1950 from the House of Mouse. In fact, it was one of the company's first animated films to have its live-action remake.

Now, Cinderella will return to the screen after Camila Cabello revived the character in 2021, but with a very different tone. The media specialized in horror films, Bloody Disgusting, announced that filming will begin next month for Cinderella's Curse, the gory version of the famous story.

The film will be directed and produced by Louisa Warren (Toothfairy), from a script by Harry Boxley (Vikings: Blood Lust), with Kelly Rian Sanson, Chrissie Wunna and Danielle Scott as the main stars.

Speaking with the outlet, Warren shared details on her vision for the project:

“This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know. There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands. I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.”

What’s Cinderella About?

Despite the fact that the first known version of the character appeared in 1600 created by the Italian writer Giambattista Basile, the most popular version would not arrive until 1814 when the Grimm brothers presented their story. More than 100 years later, Disney took the story to make Cinderella one of its best-known princesses.

The plot, at least the one presented by Disney, follows a young woman who loses her mother and later her father, being left in the care of her evil stepmother. Living in the shadow of her stepsisters, Cinderella is entrusted with household chores, barely allowed to leave the house, and is constantly mistreated by the women she lives with.

One night, when the King celebrates an important party for his son's birthday, Cinderella wishes she could attend, and a fairy godmother appears in front of her to fulfill her dream. With the help of her magic, the young woman will be able to attend the celebration, with the only condition that she returns before midnight, when the spell ends. At the ball, Cinderella dazzles the prince, but must escape before the imminent end of the enchantment, forgetting a glass slipper. The prince uses it to try to find the woman who captivated him, until he finds Cinderella.

Cinderella has even had modern versions of the story like the ones starring Hilary Duff and Selena Gomez, so the horror version could also take that route or replicate a period tale like Prime Video did with the 2019 film.
