CinemaCon 2022 continues to bring the cinematic goods, offering a first look, title reveal, and several details regarding director David O. Russell’s next feature. Now confirmed to be titled Amsterdam, the movie stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, with a first look image at the hugely talented A-list trio now released via 20th Century Studios.

As well as revealing the title, the first footage from Amsterdam was also unveiled at CinemaCon. Taking place in a warped version of the 1930s, the footage has Christian Bale, who has worked alongside director David O. Russell in the likes of American Hustle, playing a softer character than usual, with Bale and his co-stars Margot Robbie and John David Washington facing mysterious dangers amid plenty of the kind of drinking and dancing that one would expect from a period piece of this nature.

Amsterdam stars Taylor Swift alongside Bale, Robbie, and Washington, with the singer reportedly playing a mourning daughter in the clip. Swift’s character is shown weeping over her father’s body, as another member of the stellar cast, Chris Rock, looks on. “You have a dead white man in a box. It’s not even a coffin, it has no lid,” Rock says to Swift. “You know who’s going to get in trouble? The Black men.”

Amsterdam Has Been Described as a “Romantic Crime Epic”

Alongside these first-look glimpses at Amsterdam, the movie was described as being a “romantic crime epic,” with the plot following three close friends, a doctor, a nurse, and an attorney (presumably Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington), “who find themselves at the center of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history.”

Much like his previous outings, David O. Russell has once again brought together an impressively star-studded cast for Amsterdam. Led by Academy Award winner Christian Bale, Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie, and John David Washington, Amsterdam also stars Rami Malek, Zoe Saldaña, Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Taylor Swift, Leland Orser, and Sean Avery. The sheer amount of awards on display with this cast list is truly dazzling.

Amsterdam marks the third time that David O. Russell and Christian Bale have worked together, with the acting/directing duo first collaborating on the 2010 biographical sports drama The Fighter, which earned the actor an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as recovering addict and former pro-boxer Dicky Ecklund. Their second feature, 2013's American Hustle, features another of Bale's patented physical transformations as con artist Irving Rosenfeld, with his dedication earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Clearly, the Academy is drawn to both director David O. Russell and actor Christian Bale like a moth to the flame, and with so many other huge talents involved in Amsterdam, the project will surely result in something very special when it hits the silver screen later this year.

Directed, produced, and written by David O. Russell, Amsterdam is scheduled to be theatrically released on November 4, 2022.
