Tom Hanks is attached to star in an adaptation of Dave Eggers' novel The Circle, which has James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) set to write and direct. Tom Hanks is also producing with his Playtone Productions partner Gary Goetzman. The project will be shopped around at an auction for production companies, studios and financiers starting on Wednesday.

The novel centers on a young woman who lands a job at a powerful Internet company dubbed The Circle, which combines personal email, social networking, banking and other accounts to create one online entity for each user. This system is supposed to create a new age of online civility and transparency, although the novel explores dark themes such as the loss of privacy, where personal data is monetized and used for surveillance. It isn't known what role Tom Hanks may play in the adaptation.

Tom Hanks recently wrapped production on another Dave Eggers novel adaptation of A Hologram for the King. The actor will next be seen in director Steven Spielberg's Untitled Cold War Thriller, and he is also attached to a number of projects, such as Inferno, the Untitled Matt Charman/James Donovan Project and Ithaca. It isn't known when production may begin on The Circle at this time, or if it will be Tom Hanks' next film.
