Director Matt Reeves has confirmed that a sequel to his first big-screen hit, Cloverfield, is now in development. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Reeves reveals that he could one day be tempted back to the franchise, and while he does not know what the studio has in store for Cloverfield, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, he is excited to see what’s next for the movie monster.

"I have no idea. I'm super excited about us doing more, and I can't give you information about that of course because that's the way Cloverfield works. To be honest with you, you never know what you're going to do. Even though my work is all genre work, I have to feel something personal about it. Cloverfield is very much about my anxieties."

As for whether Reeves would ever consider helming another installment in the Cloverfield franchise, the filmmaker is open to the idea, utilizing that well-known philosophy “never say never.”

"That was the process that drew me in, that's what taught me how to shoot it, how to talk to the actors about what it was, because it was like trying to ground it from that perspective and make something crazy, fantastical, and genre, also feel real...I think if another story were to present itself where I was like, 'Gosh I have to tell that story.' It's not impossible. I wouldn't say that's a for sure thing, but I would never say never."

The next Cloverfield movie (which is technically Cloverfield 4 following both 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox) is expected to be a direct sequel to the first Cloverfield rather than a loosely connected installment. Word of a sequel first appeared in January 2021, with Under the Shadow and I Came By’s Babak Anvari now attached as director.

Of course, writer and director Matt Reeves does not have much time right now to think about the world of Cloverfield. Reeves is currently hard at work on honing his sequel to The Batman, with the filmmaker revealing recently that he and writing partner Mattson Tomlin are busy creating something exciting for the further adventures of Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader.

“I'm not going to answer that question, but we are working on a movie. I'll put it to you that way.” Reeves began when asked about development on The Batman 2. “We're deep in it and my partner and I are writing, Mattson [Tomlin] and I are writing, and it's really exciting, and I'm really excited about what we're doing.”

Not only is Reeves due to once again helm an outing for The Batman, he is also in charge of his own Batman universe, with series centered on The Penguin and Arkham Asylum now in development.

While things are moving along nicely for The Batman and his world, audiences are likely to be waiting a little while before sitting down to watch the comic book movie sequel in theaters. Though Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin have now put pen to paper, The Batman 2 will reportedly not be released “until 2025 at the earliest.”
