It wasn't long for the success of Cocaine Bear to inspire knockoff films, as one is already set to go for a release this summer. Called Cocaine Shark, the film comes from Wild Eye Releasing, and while it clearly doesn't have the same budget behind it as Universal's Cocaine Bear, it may prove to be just as entertaining as it's no less insane. Cocaine Shark will be released on Digital and DVD on July 7, 2023, and you can get your first look by watching the trailer below.

Mark Polonia (Amityville in Space) directs the film using a screenplay by Bret McCormick (The Abomination). It stars Ken VanSant (Queen Crab) and Titus Himmelberger (Sharkula). Per EW, the synopsis for Cocaine Shark is as follows:

In Cocaine Shark, a mafia drug lord has unleashed a new, highly addictive stimulant on the streets called HT25, derived from sharks held captive in a secret lab, which causes monstrous side effects. After an explosion and leak at the lab, an army of mutated, bloodthirsty sharks and other creatures are set loose on the world as a small band of people tries to stop the carnage.

Like Cocaine Bear, there's a true story behind Cocaine Shark. It was previously reported that three tons of cocaine was found floating in the Pacific Ocean, and that had some Cocaine Bear fans calling for Elizabeth Banks to take on Cocaine Shark next. She seemed intrigued by the idea, likely unaware that such a film was already in the works.

" If there's a great story, then sure. Jaws with cocaine, I don't see how that loses," Banks said.

Cocaine Bear writer Jimmy Warden has also told us in a MovieWeb interview that he thinks the story could keep going with other animals going on coke-fueled rampages. The shark is second up on the list, apparently, but that could just be the tip of the iceberg.

"I’m not done with the Cocaine Bear saga yet but, as for spinoffs, I’ve seen some great ideas in the corners of the internet," Warden told us. "It feels like we’ll have every animal in existence do cocaine until we come full circle and just make movies about humans doing it again. Then we’ll move on to MDMA and ayahuasca, etc. There’s no limit."

Other knockoffs are also coming. The Asylum recently teased a new film called Attack of the Meth Gator, though it wasn't entirely clear just how serious the indie film studio was when they released the official poster. In any case, it would appear that Cocaine Bear has started the newest trend in horror.
