Jurassic World: Dominion hits theaters on June 10 and is described as the "Epic Conclusion of the Jurassic Era." The film will not only serve as the finale to the Jurassic World series but will close out the nearly 30-year-old Jurassic Park franchise. Dominion is being directed by Colin Trevorrow, who helmed the first Jurassic World film in 2015, but sat out its 2018 sequel Fallen Kingdom. Trevorrow is responsible for bringing three decades of storytelling to an end, a task that he almost took on with another iconic blockbuster franchise.

Before J.J. Abrams joined the project, Trevorrow was set to direct Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, which was the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga. The film was originally going to be titled Duel of the Fates, and was drastically different than what was actualized in Rise of Skywalker. Disney ultimately decided to change course away from Trevorrow's concept, but the director told Total Film that the development process was still worthwhile:

"What I appreciate about having worked on Star Wars is that I really got a practice run at making a new version of something we loved when we were kids and bringing it to a satisfying conclusion. So I felt like I got a master's degree in that, during that time."

The Rise of Skywalker had to wrap up a nine-film saga over more than 40 years, doing so with mixed results upon its 2019 release. While Trevorrow's job isn't as daunting as Dominion, Jurassic Park still holds a lot of reverence with moviegoers across multiple generations. The first three Jurassic Park films came out between 1993-2001, and Trevorrow reimagined the franchise in 2015 with Jurassic World. The first two Jurassic World films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, so clearly there's a lot of excitement across the globe when it comes to seeing dinosaurs run amok. Hopefully, Trevorrow can bring the Jurassic Era to a more satisfying conclusion than how many fans felt about Rise of Skywalker.

Jurassic World: Dominion Could Be One of the Biggest Films of the Year

As mentioned, the previous Jurassic World films have proven to be incredibly successful at the box office. Jurassic World was the second-highest grossing domestic film of 2015 after pulling in more than $650 million, which also makes it the biggest moneymaker of the Jurassic franchise. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom dipped slightly three years later, but was still able to amass a domestic total of over $400 million in 2018. If Dominion can accumulate similar numbers as its predecessor, it could end up rivaling Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Batman, and Top Gun: Maverick for the title of highest-grossing domestic film of 2022.

Universal is clearly hoping bringing back legacy characters will help the box office returns of Dominion, a strategy employed by many long-running franchises over the last handful of years. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum are all reprising their classic roles from the original Jurassic Park, joining Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Drumming up feelings of nostalgia has helped Top Gun: Maverick rocket towards the top of the box office, but it also helps that the film has been well received by audiences and critics. The legacy factor can only take you so far, so the quality of Jurassic World: Dominion may be the ultimate determinant on whether the film will be the apex predator of 2022.
