While a sequel to the YA novel adaptation hasn't been green lit by Fox, The Maze Runner director Wes Ball seems pretty confident that he'll be retuning to this universe soon, and even showed off some concept art from The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials while speaking at his Hall H presentation for the upcoming movie. Based on the second book in the series, The Scorch Trials picks up right where The Maze Runner left off. Which means there is a cliffhanger, but it all depends on the almighty box office dollar on whether or not this follow up will actually come to fruition.

If everything falls into place, shooting on The Maze Runner 2 will begin sometime this fall. Check out the image created for this impending sequel.

The Maze Runner The Scorch Trials Concept Art

The Maze Runner is the first novel in a series of post-apocalyptic YA stories written by James Dashner. It follows a group of teens trapped in a giant maze known as The Glade. It is a living space that shifts in the middle of the night, making it nearly impossible to escape.

Here is the synopsis for The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials:

Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze would mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn't done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or you die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross through the Scorch-the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has made sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. Friendships will be tested. Loyalties will be broken. All bets are off. There are others now. Their survival depends on the Gladers' destruction-and they're determined to survive.
