Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King is based off of Richard Wagner's masterwork: "Der Ring des Nibelungen," the four-part Ring cycle thought to be the most monumental work of art to be created by one mind. It all started with his idea for a dramatic poem to be set in music which he entitled "Siegfried's Death", and was inspired by the story of a hero's death as told in the "Nibelungenlied" - the tales of Germanic mythology. The opera follows the fortunes of gods, giants, gnomes and humans as they battle greed and betrayal to reach a final redemption.
When the evil Twin Kings betray the King of Xanten, the deceased monarch's infant son, Prince Siegfried, narrowly gets away with his life, spirited away by the kindly blacksmith Eyvind.
Eyvind raises Siegfried as a blacksmith and tells the boy nothing of his true heritage. But then the gods hurl a fiery meteor to Earth, to propel Siegfried toward his true destiny.
Discovering the meteor also leads Siegfried to the woman who becomes his one true love: Brunhild, the Valkyrie warrior queen. Duty pulls them apart, but they both swear to reunite - and to never love another.
Siegfried ventures to the kingdom of Burgund, where he earns the respect of King Gunther and unfortunately the romantic desire of Princess Kriemhild. Gunther reveals to him that a powerful evil plagues his land, an evil that he cannot defeat. It falls to Siegfried, armed only with his sword forged from the gods' metal, to slay the wyrm Fafnir - and to claim the dragon's gold as his own.
With this treasure, however, comes the curse of its rightful owners: the mystic Nibelungs. Siegfried's success also draws the ire of King Gunther's adviser, the villainous Hagen, who covets the Nibelungs' gold for himself.
Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King is a "coming of age" story about star-crossed lovers Prince Siegfried and Brunhild. The message of greed as the root of all evil is clear. The ring of Nibelungs is a symbol of man's never ending longing for power and wealth. However, it is still love that is worth craving for, if everything else fails, love will still endure even in death.
