Deadline New York reports that Universal Pictures has returned to their discarded project Contraband.

Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale will star in the thriller, which is an Americanized remake of the Icelandic thriller Reykjavic-Rotterdam. The story centers on a former smuggler who gave up the life and is now a security guard. He gets dragged back into the smuggling game when his wife's brother accidently messes up a run.

Aaron Guzikowski wrote the script for this new remake, which Baltasar Kormákur will direct. Baltasar Kormákur starred in the original Reykjavic-Rotterdam, which was released in Iceland in 2008.

It wasn't stated when Contraband would go into production. A release date hasn't been set as of yet. Universal Pictures was originally set to distribute the movie, although they balked when the budget came in at $40 million. Relativity Media were in talks to distribute and, even though they got the budget down to $30 million, they still hesitated, which gave room for Universal to step back in.
