Netflix has released a new trailer for their upcoming docu-series about infamous serial killer Ted Bundy. Called Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, the series will focus on telling Bundy's story through his own words with never-before-heard interviews. Recorded three decades ago, the audio presented will take us straight into the mind of the "Jack the Ripper of the United States." By showing Bundy in a different light than ever before, director Joe Berlinger aims to give viewers a better understanding about what drove the madman into such homicidal psychopathy. Inspired by the book of the same name from authors Stephen G. Michaud and Hugh Aynesworth, the new series makes use of over 100 hours of unearthed audio from interviews with Bundy conducted while the murderer was on death row in 1980.
As revealed in the trailer, the new series will be hitting Netflix in its entirety on Jan. 24. This marks the 30th anniversary to the day Bundy was executed for his heinous crimes in Florida. His execution was highly-publicized at the time, with a crowd of hundreds cheering on his death from outside of the prison. This came after a lifetime of murdering people at random, killing at least 30 women by the time he was apprehended. Because of his murders, Bundy was ultimately given three death sentences before he was finally executed by electrocution in 1989. It's scary just how much of an impact Bundy left on the world with his crimes, as he remains one of history's most infamous serial killers three full decades past his death.
Before admitting to his many murders, Ted Bundy had long been professing his innocence after his capture. Distrusting lawyers, Bundy would mostly handle his own defense when on trial. During his incarceration, Bundy had even managed to marry and father a child, convincing his new wife he was, in fact, innocent. When Bundy later publicly confessed to the murders, his wife felt betrayed, refusing to take the serial killer's phone call on the day of his execution. That he was able to convince anyone he was innocent even with such strong evidence against him shows just how charming Bundy could really be.
This new docu-series won't be all we'll be seeing of Bundy's story this year. Zac Efron will star as the murderer in the upcoming movie Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, with Lily Collins co-starring as Bundy's former girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer. Jim Parsons, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Haley Joel Osment, and Angela Sarafyan also star. The movie takes place from Kloepfer's perspective as she learns of Bundy's horrific true nature. Also directed by Berlinger, the movie will be having its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 26.
As good as Efron might be in the role, nothing can capture just how truly terrifying Ted Bundy is like the serial killer himself. Conversations with a Killer will definitely be a must-see series for Netflix subscribers addicted to the true crime content streaming on the service.
