Scream staple Courteney Cox would love to return for more in the now-confirmed sequel, Scream 6. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Cox, who has played Gale Weathers ever since the first movie back in 1996, heaped praise on Scream 5 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and how they have resurrected the slasher series, stating that it is something she would love to continue to be a part of. So long as she can, anyway...

"Does that mean I didn't die? Okay, if I'm allowed to say that, of course. What a fun experience to have such a longstanding series of movies and this one just feels completely invigorated in a new way. And it's a relaunch, not a fifth episode, whatever you call it ... It's a relaunch and the directors are incredible and I think Wes would be looking down and saying, 'I'm so happy it's Matt and Tyler.'"

Cox is clearly just as enamored by the efforts of Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin to reinvigorate the slasher series. Much like the critical response to Scream, which has been hugely positive since release, Cox praises the filmmaking pair’s ability to pay genuine tribute to the late Wes Craven while bringing the Scream franchise into the world of modern movie making.

Cox has described the latest Scream movie as a "new franchise" in the past saying, "This is the fifth one... it's not Scream 5, though. This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they're making it absolutely...it's a new franchise... It's hip. It's scary. It's just a new Scream. It's not a reboot, it's not a remake, it's just a brand-new launch. I think it's gonna be fantastic." Evidently, she is hoping to have a role, however minor, in this new franchise going forward.

Thanks to the homage to Wes Craven, as well as the same thoughtful meta-commentary element that the Scream series is so well-known for, fans quickly began asking for a Scream 6. Due to both the critical and financial response to the fifth Scream, a sixth installment in the slasher franchise has now been confirmed. Paramount and Spyglass Media recently made an official announcement, revealing that Scream 6 is now going into production with the intention to begin filming this summer. Scream 6 is expected to be released sometime in 2023.

For now, the fifth installment in the horror franchise, Scream, picks up some twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, California. A new killer emerges and dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.

Scream is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a script written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The sequel stars Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, and Jack Quaid, alongside Marley Shelton, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell, who reprise their roles from previous installments. Scream was theatrically released in the United States on January 14, 2022, by Paramount Pictures.
