This news has been swimming around for a while, but now it is official. According to Variety, Dreamworks and Universal are teaming up to bring the graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens to the big screen.

Imagine's Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing the project. The plot revolves around a skirmish between a couple of cowboys and some Apache Indians. There battle is interrupted by an alien space ship crash landing in the desert. The cowboys and Indians must team up to defeat the evil alien overlord, who plans on turning everyone in sight into a slave. The film will take place in Arizona during the late 1800s.

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby will be writing the adaptation, based on the Malibu Comics graphic novel of the same name. A shooting start date has not been announced.
