Aliens attach in Jon Favereau's Cowboys and AliensFinally, we asked Favreau just how much of the film is adapted from the actual source material and how much is just a riff on the idea of the film's title? Well, we wanted the story to be a surprise. We wanted to make sure that you were going to get a new theme. That you weren't going to know what was going to happen, even though the theme is still kind of relatable. The characters are all different. We wanted it to be inspired by the graphic novel and covering the same things, but we wanted it to be a surprise, he answered.
Harrison Ford is Col. Woodrow DolarhydeBesides {79}, Spielberg and Howard's obvious connections to both the Western and alien genres, there are many other crew members and actors who have experience with those genres as well. Such as actor {80}, who starred on HBO's hit Western series {81}. Favreau talked further about the importance of having talent like that involved with this production. I think I grew up on it, so it's in my bones. So that's my context and I think you're seeing a lot of people from my generation ... I mean, that's who we had. That's what we've come up with. Terry Leonard's our Second Unit Director, he worked with {82} and was a stunt man for a long time in Westerns. So he'd been around all of it. As a matter of fact, we hired one of his roping partners ... {83}. That's {84}'s grandson, Favreau exclaimed!

1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Daniel Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Harrison Ford). It's a town that lives in fear.

But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents-townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors-all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.
