The first reactions for Crawl are in! This movie feels like it's falling under the radar a bit in a summer full of big, glitzy blockbusters. But many of those blockbusters have tanked, or at the very least underperformed. Luckily, it sounds very much like we're in for something totally different this weekend and, if the first reactions are to be believed, horror lovers are in for a real treat.

Crawl, very simply, centers on a daughter and her father who are trapped during a hurricane when vicious alligators wind up trying to hunt them down. It's produced by the legendary Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead) and directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha). That has apparently made for a winning combination. Moviefone's Drew Taylor had this to say on Twitter.

"Secret's out: #CrawlMovie is the horror movie of the summer, an ingeniously realized creature feature classic full of Alexandre Aja's patented combination of white knuckle suspense set pieces and gnarly gore. It delivers big time."

Horror has been one of the few things that has been working this summer. Annabelle Comes Home has been doing quite well, Midsommar is earning rave reviews and even the Child's Play remake surprised a lot of critics. But Crawl sounds like it's on another level. Collider's Perri Nemiroff had this to say.

"#CrawlMovie is a bats***, wild summer thrill! I'm a pretty quiet movie watcher but that went out the window here. Forget "edge of your seat" - had to stop myself from jumping out of it a few times. See this one on the big screen with a packed house."

One struggles to find any negative reactions on Twitter currently, as those who have seen Crawl generally seem to love it. That said, it seems like it's not quite for everyone. Those who have seen it warn that it's very intense and not for the faint of heart. However, for those who don't mind a lot of blood and heart-pounding thrills, this may be the sleeper of the summer. Erik Davis of Fandango had this to add.

"#Crawl adds to an already solid summer of horror by delivering everything you want from a trapped-in-a-basement-with-alligators movie. It's scary & thrilling, the kills are gnarly, the pacing is terrific & Kaya Scodelario sells it all splendidly. Funky, freaky & totally worth it."

The cast is headlined by Kaya Scodelario (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan). The movie will be opening against the action/comedy Stuber, as well as a couple of indies in the form of The Farewell and The Art of Self-Defense. Crawl arrives in theaters this weekend from Paramount Pictures. Be sure to check out some more reactions from Twitter below.
