It’s hard to believe that it’s been four years since Crazy Rich Asians stole our hearts. This heart-warming rom-com beautifully explored what happens when family and love collide. In addition to being a phenomenal movie, Crazy Rich Asians was a huge deal for Hollywood since it was the first film by a major studio in decades that featured a majority Asian cast. The movie went on to get some stellar reviews and even grossed a jaw-dropping $240 million globally.

All this fanfare and critical acclaim naturally meant that Warner Bros. was already considering developing a sequel based on the next novel in the trilogy by Kevin Kwan, China Rich Girlfriend. In fact, even the third novel, Rich People Problems, is set to appear on the big screen.

But, talking about the third part seems unnecessary, considering the development for the second part itself has been so vague. The sequel was set to bring back the same cast and was initially supposed to release in 2020. However, a few behind-the-scenes problems have mostly led to that delay. Now that it’s been four years since the first film was released let’s find out the update on Crazy Rich Asians 2.

What Will Crazy Rich Asians 2 Be About?

Crazy Rich Asians
Warner Bros.

Crazy Rich Asians’ storyline was based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan novel of the same name and the storyline also pretty much followed the book. This means it’s likely that the sequel will also follow the novel’s storyline. The second novel in the three-part series is titled China Rich Girlfriend.

In the novel, the story picks up two years after the first part ends. We’ll be seeing Rachel, who was played by Constance Wu, being reunited with her long last dad and diving deeper into the world of Chinese billionaires who make the Young family’s wealth look like peanuts in comparison. In fact, this sequel’s title comes from Nick’s (played by Henry Golding) mother (played by Michelle Yeoh), who says, "These people aren't just everyday rich with a few hundred million. They are China rich!"

In addition to that storyline, the second part also sheds light on the budding romance between Astrid (played by Gemma Chan) and her ex-boyfriend Charlie Wu. This storyline was briefly revealed in the movie towards the end, where we see Harry Shum Jr., set to play the role of Wu, briefly making eye contact and discreetly smiling at Astrid, hinting at their love story in the sequel. The only thing different between the book and the movie is that the second novel still has Astrid and her husband together, but we see their relationship end in the first movie itself. Of course, we are certain that the writers will find a way or two to complicate their love story.

Who We Expect to See in the Sequel

Will Crazy Rich Asians Take the Summer Box Office Out on a High Note?

We are pretty confident that most of the main cast members, if not all, from the first film, will be coming back for the sequel. So, we will definitely be seeing Henry Golding and Constance Wu again being the main lead in the movie. In addition, we will see Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, and many of the other actors who were in the first film come back for the sequel.

As per the storyline in the second novel, we will see many new faces in addition to the original cast. For instance, in the book China Rich Girlfriend, Carlton Bao, Rachel’s brother, is a part of the storyline. Bao is going to create more complications in this family. Most importantly, we will also be seeing the introduction of Colette Bing. She is a blogger from China who’s always in couture. Since fashion was a vital part of the first installment, we can only expect it to go a level higher this time in the sequel. If the movie retains the same storyline for Bing as the book, be prepared for some phenomenal clothing. As far as who will be playing these characters, there’s no official update about it.

Potential Release Date

Crazy Rich Asians Review: A Romantic Comedy Masterpiece

At the time of writing, there has been no official update about the sequel’s release date. In fact, Collider's announcement back in December 2018 stated that both the sequels, China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems, were scheduled to be filmed back to back in 2020. But, as mentioned earlier, some behind-the-scenes issues and the COVID-19 pandemic led to this getting delayed. We’re sure that we won’t be seeing the sequel hit the screen this year either.
