Star Wars sequel lead Daisy Ridley is open to a return to a galaxy far, far away, with the actress stating that she would consider bringing Rey back for more adventures. Speaking with IMDb at Sundance's Acura Festival Village, the actress, who first played Rey in 2015’s Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, revealed that she would certainly take the call should Lucasfilm ever pick up the phone and dial.
"I mean, I'm open to a phone call. I'm looking for employment!"
The Star Wars saga introduced Rey in the first installment of the Disney sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with the character leading the action in both Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the finale Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While the series as a whole proved to be aggressively polarizing, there were many who warmed to both Daisy Ridley and Rey, and would no doubt love to see the character return.
Should Rey play a role in the future of Star Wars, she is unlikely to be joined by Finn, with co-star John Boyega recently declaring that he is "good" without the franchise. "At this point I'm cool off it. I'm good off it," the actor said. "I think Finn is at a good confirmation point where you can just enjoy him in other things, the games, the animation. But I feel like [Episode] VII to [Episode] IX was good for me. To be fair, [with] the allies that I've found with Joel Taylor and Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris, Viola Davis, all these people I've been working with... versatility is my path."
Kathleen Kennedy Has Teased a Return to the Star Wars Sequels
The Star Wars sequels proved to be a divisive return to a galaxy far, far away. Despite this, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has promised that the franchise will return to this timeline and once again follow at least some the new characters that were introduced. “We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space,” Kennedy teased last year. “The sequel era] is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That’s very much the space we’re concentrating on.”
Whether the plans include the return of Rey is unknown at this time, but it has been revealed that Lost and Watchmen writer Damon Lindelof is currently working on a Star Wars movie. And that it will take place after the events of the Disney sequel trilogy.
Sources close to the project have said that it "is intended as a stand-alone but in success could lead to more movies,” adding that “the story would take place after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” but that it will “not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga.”
Lindelof will work on the Star Wars sequel movie alongside fellow writer Justin Britt-Gibson, with Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy tapped to helm the project. While the movie does not yet have a release date, reports have claimed that it could get the December 2025 release date that has been carved out in the Disney calendar.
Daisy Ridley meanwhile can next be seen in the romantic dramedy Sometimes I Think About Dying, which has now premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
