The upcoming Madame Web film will star Dakota Johnson as the titular Marvel character, and the actress has teased the "heart" that she brings to the movie. In a new interview with Collider, Johnson shared some details on the project, though she obviously couldn't divulge any specific spoilers. She did seem optimistic about the movie's success, feeling that her experience with smaller-scope features should help her bring something different to the Hollywood blockbuster.

“I guess having experience on all tiers of films I can bring maybe some stuff from the little movies to the big movies that I want to see in them, you know? I really love seeing large-scale films that still have heart in them.”

Johnson also went on to state that there are "people" from Cha Cha Real Smooth and Am I Okay?, two other films she's worked on, who will be following her to Madame Web. It's not clear if Johnson is referring to other cast members from those films or different crew members, but it's worth noting that none of the confirmed cast members announced so far appeared in either of those movies. In any case, it has Johnson pretty stoked to get to work.

“People from ‘Cha Cha [Real Smooth]’ and some from ‘Am I Okay?’ are coming on to Madame Web with me. It’s cool. It’s fun to be able to start creating a real team of people that make movies.”

Madame Web Will Be Part of Sony's Marvel Universe

Madame Web will be directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) using a screenplay written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius). Along with Johnson, the film stars Tahar Rahim, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O'Connor, and Isabela Merced. No details on the other cast members' roles have yet been revealed.

The film is a part of Sony's Marvel Universe which runs concurrently with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though there has been some crossover. This universe consists of the two Venom movies as well as the recently-released Morbius. While Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were big hits at the box office, Morbius fell short of expectations, flopping once more with its return to theaters after online fan pressure. It would seem that Sony's Marvel movies can go either way with how they are received and there will be a lot of fan interest to see how Madame Web fares.

Not very much has been revealed about the new Madame Web movie in terms of plot. It has been described as an origin story for the "clairvoyant, whose psychic abilities allow her to see within the spider world." There have been different depictions of Madame Web in Marvel fiction, but she has often been portrayed as a blind, elderly woman suffering from myasthenia gravis. Keeping her alive is a support system resembling a spiderweb, giving her the familiar name of Madame Web.

Madame Web is set to be released in movie theaters on July 7, 2023.
