Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon is back at it with a new animated series in the works at FOX. Reportedly, the series will be set in ancient Greece and will follow "a flawed family of humans, gods, and monsters that tries to run one of the world's first cities without killing each other." The network has already given a series order for the show with plans to premiere the cartoon sometime in 2022.

"Leave it to Dan Harmon to turn the mythos of early Greek civilization into remarkably sharp commentary on today's politics, celebrity and pop culture," said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn in a statement. "This project is an incredibly irreverent family comedy as told by one of the town's most inventive storytellers. We are proud to be partnered with Dan on this series, which strengthens our hold on the animation space and, as we continue to build FOX Entertainment, marks an important first step for us with our first fully owned scripted property."

The series stems from a direct broadcast deal Harmon signed with Fox that included a series commitment for an animated show. Fox Entertainment will wholly own and finance the untitled show with Bento Box Entertainment serving as the animation studio. Harmon will also executive produce. No names have yet been announced to be a part of the voice cast for the new series, but as the project is officially a go, the cast will likely start adding some names before long.

Along with creating Community, Harmon is also known for co-creating the hit Adult Swim series Rick and Morty with Justin Roiland. Originating as a Back to the Future parody, the acclaimed series follows a drunken scientist and his timid grandson as they traverse on wild adventures throughout space and time. It has since become one of today's most popular animated shows, winning the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program on two occasions for the episodes "Pickle Rick" and "The Vat of Acid Episode."

Fox nearly worked with one of the Rick and Morty creators already, as Solar Opposites was originally developed for the network before Hulu later picked up the rights. Featuring a similar art style to Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites follows a family of aliens who seek a better life in middle America. The series was created by Roiland and Mike McMahan, and Harmon was not involved with the show. After premiering on Hulu last year, the second season is set to be released on the streamer on March 26.

Harmon and Roiland might be involved with separate shows, but there's still plenty more of Rick and Morty to look forward to. The fourth season arrived in 2019 and it's expected that season 5 will debut sometime this year, though a release date hasn't yet been set. A sixth season has also already been confirmed as part of a renewal deal with Comedy Central for 70 new episodes over time, and Harmon said last year that the writers had already begun work on season 6.
