Daniel Radcliffe, best known for Harry Potter films, is planning to helm his own film as a director. Radcliffe has several acting credits to his name across films, television productions, and plays. His latest release is the action-comedy, The Lost City, in which he co-starred alongside Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. And now he is on his way to directing a film.

Recently, while promoting The Lost City in an interview with Empire, Radcliffe revealed the idea of his film, which he plans to direct. He said:

"I've got an idea for something that I have written. I'm hopefully going to direct. It will be in a couple of years' time, because the next 18 months at least are pretty much accounted for already."

The actor was quick to give the timeline probably to avoid unnecessary press over his planned film before he actually gears it up and kick-starts production. He avoided giving any details on the plot of his film but did drop that the backdrop of its script is something to do with the film industry. Talking about how the idea for his film came from his personal life experiences, he said,

"People always say, 'Write what you know'. I've had a very unrelatable life, so I don't want to write that. But I have found a way of writing something that is kind of connected to the film industry, about that."

Radcliffe has been in the industry since he was a kid. He was roped in to play Harry Potter in the first film at the age of eleven. And since then, he has always been active in films in both the U.S. and the UK. So it’s pretty much understandable that the actor’s most experiences are in and around his work in the industry. And probably it’s that life his film has been inspired by.

Daniel Radcliffe is getting on board a lot of projects lately. His latest, The Lost City, has opened up to a highly positive critical reception. He is also set to portray Alfred Yankovic in his biopic, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Besides Harry Potter, he is also known for his performances in Swiss Army Man, Jungle, and Escape From Pretoria. His post-Harry Potter career has been filled with roles that are more eccentric and creativity-driven, and he has mostly stayed away from big-budget franchises. He has simultaneously maintained a position in the television industry, noted especially for his lead role in Miracle Workers. Moreover, he was recently in news for the rumors about his potential casting as Wolverine in the MCU.

Radcliffe had once commented on his post-Harry Potter roles while talking to MovieWeb, where he mentioned how there’s never really a plan in selecting films despite a pattern of choice in his acting roles since Harry Potter. He said,

"Zero planning. This is going to sound really simple and boring but I just do what I think is going to make me happy now. I do what I think is going to make me happy to do, and fun to watch, or interesting to watch. When I was in my early 20s and coming out of Potter, I think I thought I needed to be more strategic in things, and I have very much moved on from that belief in a lot of ways in the last few years. Now I just do the things I'm interested in and the sort of things I love. Maybe that means I have really weird tastes. Other people refer to my films as weird. I can see where they're coming from, but I would also say I don't just do weird movies."

For now, Daniel Radcliffe's directorial debut remains an idea that we shall not see sprout for a while, but given the actor’s confidence and commitment to it while he talked about it, it seems he won’t back out on it.

Daniel Radcliffe’s The Lost City is currently being played at theaters. Directed by Adam Nee and Aaron Nee, the film also stars Sandra Bullock, Changing Tatum, and Brad Pitt.
