The Marvel SDCC 2022 panel brought exciting news for fans. Daredevil: Born Again, a brand-new original series, was set to be released on Disney+. An initial Daredevil live-action show first aired on Netflix in 2015 and was beloved by critics and fans alike. The series ran for a total of three seasons from 2015 to 2018 and launched an entire shared corner of the MCU called The Defenders Saga. After a significantly successful run, the show was canceled by Netflix in November 2018. Although the cancelation occurred somewhat abruptly and came as a disappointment to many fans, there is a high probability that the series was pulled from Netflix, like many other Marvel properties, to enable Marvel to stream their work on their very own streaming service and the announcement of Daredevil: Born Again got fans excited about the return of one of Marvel's signature heroes.

With Daredevil: Born Again announced in 2022, fans have been itching for more news about the series and a possible release date for it. Marvel has done their part in remaining quite tight-lipped regarding the direction of Born Again, leaving fans guessing and excitement building. The production and development journey of the series has not been without hurdles, having had to overcome creative troubles and the SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, it now looks like the series is on a steady path to release. Here is everything we know about the highly anticipated new Daredevil: Born Again series.

Daredevil: Born Again, confirmed in July 2022, was initially set for a spring 2024 release. However, since then, the show has faced quite a few challenges, from the series being shut down due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strike in 2023 as well as the creative overhaul behind the scenes.

A release date for Daredevil: Born Again remains unconfirmed at the time of writing. However, with the series currently reported to be in its filming stage, it is likely that Born Again will only take to screens sometime in 2025. A 2025 release date means the series will premiere ten years after Daredevil first aired on Netflix.

Daredevil: Born Again: The Plot

No details regarding the plot of the series have been made public yet. However, fans have had a few assumptions regarding a possible plot line for the show. A popular theory, carrying from the title of the series and the comics, is that Daredevil: Born Again might follow what Den of Geek calls “one of Daredevil’s best stories — and one his bleakest.”

As per the comics, the story begins with Daredevil’s secret identity being sold to the Kingpin by the drug-addicted Karen Page in exchange for her next fix. Based on the information given by Page, Kingpin then sets out to destroy Daredevil’s life. As a result, Murdock is made homeless, broke, and hopeless. The narrative follows the superhero as he fights to find his path back to justice and get his life back on track. While this narrative appears to be a plausible path for the new series to explore, it still remains only an assumption. The studio will likely need to make some big changes to the source material, as the Born Again storyline was partially used in Daredevil season 3. Also, the live-action version of Karen Page is not a drug addict, so this major bit of information would be a big change for the character.

If anything, the Daredevil: Born Again title is a meta-reference to the fact that Daredevil is getting revived after its cancelation, similar to the Spider-Man: Homecoming title having double meanings as it referenced the Homecoming dance in the film but also the fact that Spider-Man was making his return to Marvel. Marvel might be opting for an original story but using an iconic title, as they have done in the past. Avengers: Age of Ultron shares the title of the comic book storyline Age of Ultron, but the plot of the two are very different. Both Captain America: Civil War and Secret Invasion take their titles from iconic comic book storylines but only keep the broad outline and change many details about them.

One plot point many can assume will happen is Wilson Fisk, aka The Kingpin, running for mayor of New York City. This storyline was teased in the mid-credits of the final episode of Echo, and it appears to be a major story arc for Daredevil: Born Again to explore. Yet much of what the series was originally going to be and what audiences see will likely be very different as this series has undergone a lot of behind-the-scenes changes.

Daredevil: Born Again: The Cast

Allowing familiarity with the brand-new series, Charlie Cox will be reprising his role as Daredevil’s Matt Murdock, a lawyer who is blind but has heightened senses and uses his evolved fighting skills to battle crime in addition to fighting for justice. This marks Cox's fourth major return as the character as he cameoed in Spider-Man: No Way Home, appeared in two episodes of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and recently appeared in Echo. Vincent D’Onofrio will also reprise his role as Kingpin following his appearances in both Hawkeye and Echo.

In exciting news for fans, both Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson were sighted filming on the Born Again set in New York City. This confirms that Woll's Karen Page and Henson's Foggy Nelson will appear in the new Daredevil series, but it is unclear how big their roles will be in the new series.

Other returning cast members include Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, while Wilson Bethel's Bullseye will reprise his role as Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, aka the MCU version of Bullseye. Vanessa Fisk, the wife of the Kingpin, will return, but she will be recast. Ayelet Zurer portrayed her in Daredevil seasons one and three, but the role has been recast with Sandrine Holt stepping into the role.

Regarding new cast members, Margarita Levieva will be playing the role of Heather Glenn, one of Matt Murdock's many romantic partners. Arty Froushan has been cast as Buck Cashman, who in the comics is the Daredevil villain Bullet. Nikki M. James, Genneya Walton, Michael Gandolfini, and Clark Johnson have been cast in currently undisclosed roles.

Rumors have circulated that Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones in the series, but no official confirmation has been made, and this will likely be a secret Marvel Studios wants to keep hidden as a surprise for fans when they tune in if it is true. The same goes for Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, aka Echo, or Tatiana Maslaney as Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, two MCU characters that now have a connection to Matt Murdock. Set photos did reveal the costume of the comic book hero White Tiger, so they will likely play a part in the series, but it is unknown who is playing them or which of the many incarnations it is.

Behind the Scenes Trouble

In October 2023, Variety reported that Marvel was looking to take the series in a new creative direction following the overhaul of its creative team. Filming for Daredevil: Born Again began on March 6, 2023, and continued until June 14, 2023, as the ongoing WGA Strike and the looming SAG-AFTRA Strike would halt production entirely. By this point, Marvel had already filmed six episodes of the series. Reportedly, Marvel was not happy with the direction the series was going as it was becoming more of a legal series, and they were looking to capture the tone and the spirit of the original Netflix series. Original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord were replaced with Dario Scardapane, who previously had been a writer on Netflix's Daredevil spin-off series The Punisher, as the showrunner. This was around the time that Marvel Studios shifted how they were developing television series, moving from the head writer format they had established and going for a more traditional showrunner format that television has succeded at.

The directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were brought on board to direct the rest of the episodes. Benson and Moorhead had previously worked on two other MCU Disney+ series, Moon Knight and Loki season two. While originally meant to be an 18-episode series, split across two nine-episode installments, the behind-the-scenes retooling of the series has affected the number of episodes that the series will have. Given this, the plot of Daredevil: Born Again still remains shrouded in mystery. Yet, hopefully, Marvel's decision to rethink the series and go back to the drawing board to make it right as opposed to moving forward with something that was not working will pay off and be worth the wait.
