She-Hulk is set to debut on Disney+ in less than a week, and fans are excited to see Charlie Cox returning as Hell’s Kitchen’s Daredevil. Cox’s performance as Marvel’s street-level vigilante was well appreciated in the now-canceled Netflix original. The brutal and highly intense take on the character made Matt Murdock a fan favorite through the show’s three seasons.

After a long wait, the actor was brought into the MCU fold with a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. And now he is set to bring Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. However, this iteration of Daredevil will be slightly different. Firstly, Cox will don a comic-accurate red and golden suit for the show, and the character’s ruthless intensity and fierceness will be toned down. In a conversation with The Direct, creator Jessica Gao discussed Charlie Cox’s portrayal in the series.

Appreciating Charlie and talking about bringing him on board to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Gao said,

Charlie is so wonderful. He’s so game to do whatever, and he’s such a wonderful actor and a wonderful human being. What was so fun about bringing him and Daredevil into our world is that people have already seen a Daredevil who is very dramatic, a little bit on the heavy side, very dark, brooding. It was so fun to be able to do–and we do this with every character cameo from the MCU–is we take them from the environment that you know them from, which is a much more dramatic and action-oriented role, much more on the serious side, and we bring them into our world, and they get to play in the tone of She-Hulk. And they got to explore, and we get to see a lighter side of that character.

Gao added that no one believed that Daredevil was on the table when the show was being written and that his inclusion was a huge surprise for the creative team.

First of all, we were shocked that we were able to use him. Like, when we first heard that he was on the table, I mean, we couldn’t believe it. We kept thinking like,’ Okay, at some point, someone’s gonna say ‘Just kidding.” Like, ‘It’s a cruel joke, and you actually can’t have him.’ And it just kept going and kept going.

Fans May Be Divisive About Daredevil’s MCU Debut

Daredevil was a massive hit because of Charlie Cox’s darker characterization as Matt Murdock. In the series, Murdock, from the beginning, was adamant about inflicting pain upon his enemies, and his vigilantism’s purpose was also heavy and brutally damaging. But, MCU operates in a PG-13 area wherein a massive bunch of its audiences comprises children. That is a solid reason to tone down Matt Murdock’s portrayal in She-Hulk compared to Netflix’s Daredevil. However, it might not land very well with Daredevil fans. They would expect hardcore action from the actor in She-Hulk and eventually in his own series.

Matt Murdock’s story arc would continue in detail in Daredevil: Born Again, an 18-episode Disney+ original. It’s not exactly clear whether the show will tie in with Netflix’s Daredevil or if Marvel Studios will ever make Netflix’s continuity shows with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with Cox and D’Onofrio returning, Daredevil: Born Again may try to revitalize these characters’ arcs by factoring in the aftermath of the Blip.

There’s no telling how extensive Charlie Cox’s role will be in She-Hulk, but his new attire is worthwhile to witness on-screen as he teams up with Jennifer Walters.
