Of the several shows that formed the Marvel Television Universe, Daredevil was an instant fan-favorite and when the Netflix based series was canceled, it sparked a host of “Save Daredevil” online campaigns. After a short while, those campaigns lost momentum and although Marvel fans still expressed their wish to see Charlie Cox continuing his Daredevil role in future, it looked like it was the end of the road for the blind superhero in that format. Then recently Kevin Feige commented that whenever Daredevil makes his debut in the MCU, then Cox would be returning to the role. Spoilers lie ahead for numerous recent Marvel releases, so proceed with caution.

Shortly after Feige’s comments, Marvel fans found their wishes of a Daredevil return coming true much earlier than they could have hoped. In the space of a week, Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in cinemas featuring Charlie Cox’s introduction to the MCU as lawyer Matt Murdock, and Disney+’s Hawkeye series brought Vincent D’Onofrio back as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk. While both actors have been completely stonewalling any questions about their possible return to the world of Marvel, it seems that Cox at least may have been aware of his impending arrival for a lot longer than anyone knew.

Iron Fist star Jessica Henwick recently discussed her role in The Matrix Resurrections with The Hollywood Reporter, and while discussing the possibility of reprising her Marvel role of Colleen Wing in future, she revealed that Cox has been set to continue as Daredevil “for years”.

"If I did [Shang-Chi], I would effectively be putting Colleen to bed," Henwick said, referencing her decision to choose a role in The Matrix sequel over a role in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. "It wasn't the main factor, but it definitely came up in conversation. I love Colleen. She changed my life. Of course, if I was given the opportunity to revisit her, I would, but I just don't know how likely that is. Charlie [Cox] knew about that opportunity years ago. He already knew it was happening. I think I would have heard by now if there were any plans with Colleen."

For long term followers of Marvel, this revelation will not come as much of a surprise as we know just how far in advance Kevin Feige and his ever expanding team. The Daredevil series came to an end in 2018, and it would not be surprising if Cox knew then that he would be back as Daredevil at some point, even if it hadn’t quite been decided where or when that would be. The same can be said for D’Onofrio, who has spent almost two months denying that he was part of the Hawkeye series despite teasing the appearance himself with subtle references on Twitter.

With the Marvel Television Universe now having been essentially brought under the MCU banner officially, fans are eager to discover who else could be reprising their former roles in future. While there has currently been no word on exactly when we will see either Daredevil or Kingpin again, it is certain that there are plans afoot for both characters and Marvel aren’t known for allowing their most popular characters to slip away before getting the most out of them.
