The first clip from Dark Phoenix has arrived online. This is sort of becoming the under-the-radar blockbuster of the summer in some ways. Because Disney has taken over the Marvel properties that used to be owned by Fox, this is the final X-Men movie that will be released within that continuity. Also, given the rumored production troubles, excitement for this one has been tempered. That said, this first clip offers a potentially encouraging look at what lies ahead next month.

This footage centers on a confrontation, not surprisingly, between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). The divide between these two has been at the heart of these movies ever since the first X-Men movie in 2000, back when it was Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in the respective roles. In this instance, Professor X is trying to prevent his old pal Eric from attacking Jean Grey, who has become exceedingly dangerous now that she's got the Phoenix Force coursing through her. The clip is tense, well acted and all together at home in the franchise in a good way.

Simon Kinberg, who has served as a longtime writer and producer on the franchise, makes his directorial debut with Dark Phoenix. Normally, directors don't tackle a blockbuster of this size as their first movie and that had some feeling nervous. Ultimately, the studio ordered massive reshoots. That's not terribly uncommon for big movies these days, though buzz around town is that there were big problems to address. However, it's quite possible those issues have been addressed and maybe, just maybe, we'll get a fitting final entry in the X-Men franchise before its inevitable reboot. Not counting The New Mutants, which is a spin-off that won't feature any of the core cast members (as far as we know).

Dark Phoenix centers on the X-Men heading out on a rescue mission in space. Unfortunately, things go wrong and Jean is nearly killed when she is blasted by a mysterious cosmic force. Upon returning home, this force not only makes her a whole lot more powerful, but also very unstable. Wrestling with this power inside her, Jean unleashes her this newfound might in ways she doesn't understand and simply can't contain. As she spirals out of control, the X-Men begin to unravel. Now, with the group falling apart, they must find a way to unite, not just to save Jean's life, but to save our very planet from an even greater threat.

The core cast from the most recent movies will be returning. This includes Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. Jessica Chastain is also on board as the mysterious new villain. Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7. Be sure to check out the clip from the 20th Century Fox YouTube channel below.
