Director Darren Aronofsky has agreed to direct the Mandalay Pictures adaptation of Machine Man, according to Heat Vision Blog.

Darren Aronofsky will help develop the screenplay with his Black Swan co-writer Mark Heyman, working from Max Barry's unfinished novel. We first reported last year that Mandalay Pictures had optioned the partial manuscript. Barry is publishing the novel one page a day as an online serial at his website, with Vintage Books publishing the entire novel next spring.

The story centers on a tech-savvy engineer who is obsessed with self-improvement. He decides to replace his body parts with state-of-the-art titanium upgrades. He comes to learn that several organizations want to use him to serve their own agendas.

The site reports that Darren Aronofsky will continue to develop this project until his deal to direct X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 falls into place. He will then direct Machine Man after he completes work on X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2.
