Universal Pictures has brought on Joe Roth (Snow White and the Huntsman, Alice in Wonderland) to produce Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

We reported just over one year ago that Universal acquired the rights to Laini Taylor's novel, which was a finalist for the National Book Award last year. The story centers on a 17-year-old Karou, an art student who is sent around the world to collect teeth for her bizarre father. After encountering an angel, she begins to learn the truth about her family. Here's what the producer had to say about this story.

"In Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Laini Taylor masterfully tells a story of identity and destiny that welcomes readers into a fantastical world with a unique mythology. It is very different than anything we've seen before and I look forward to bringing the fascinating characters to the big screen."

Author Laini Taylor also released a statement about the producer coming on board.

"I am a huge fan of his big, gorgeous fantasy epics with powerful female characters. I can't wait to see how he'll bring my world to life on film. He's the dream producer for this property, and I couldn't be happier."

No production schedule has been released.
