New information has come to light about the attack on Dave Chappelle that took place at Netflix is a Joke: The Festival, including an apparent motive. The incident happened earlier this month while Chappelle was performing on stage as one of the festival's headlining acts. The comic had quite the scare when a man rushed onto the stage and tackled him, and the strange ordeal was made all the more terrifying when it was revealed the assailant was carrying a blade attached to a replica gun.

The assailant has since been identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee. In a new interview with the New York Post, Lee claims that he attacked Chappelle because he felt "triggered" by the comedian's jokes, specifically his material about the LGTBTQ+ community. Lee also says he hopes the attack will teach Chappelle a lesson.

"I identify as bisexual … and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering," said Lee, speaking from the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. "I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect."

According to Lee, he visited the festival intending to have a "good time," but things took a turn when Chappelle's material took aim at his past controversies with the LGBTQ+ community. Because he had previously been homeless himself, Lee says he also took exception to jokes about homelessness, but the joke that allegedly made him decide to rush the stage was said to be a "crude" joke about child abuse.

After the attack, it appeared that security had roughed up Lee based on photos of his injured face that had gone viral shortly thereafter. Lee says that they spat on him and twisted him "as if on purpose," breaking his arm and giving him two black eyes. Even so, the Post reports that Lee doesn't regret what happened as he saw it as an opportunity to "speak out" against offensive comedians.

“I told him my mother and grandmother, who fought for his civil rights to be able to speak, would be upset at the things he said,” Lee claims he told Chappelle backstage as he was being taken away.

"Now your story will die with you, son," Chappelle is said to have responded.

Lee admits he was carrying a replica handgun with a retractable blade when he tackled Chappelle on stage, but insists he hadn't intended to use it. Previously, Lee had recorded a rap song under the name "NoName_Trapper" called "Dave Chappell," and he says his work in hip hop has made him a "minor celebrity." Lee claims that he always carried the weapon for protection for that reason.

For the attack on Chappelle, Lee is facing four misdemeanor counts, but separate legal problems could end up putting him away for a very long time. Due to the viral attention the attack on Chappelle had brought, a former roommate of Lee's had identified him as the person who had stabbed him in December at a transitional housing facility. For that incident, Lee has been charged with attempted murder, a crime he may have gotten away with if not for the Netflix festival incident.

“It was pretty much done," Lee said, referring to his attack on Chappelle getting downgraded to misdemeanor charges. "But it went from me probably only doing six months [in jail] and having to do community service and living in a transitional home … to possibly 15 or more years in jail."
