David Cronenberg might be heading to the covert world of Robert Ludlum for his next film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cronenberg is in negotiations to direct The Matarese Circle. Denzel Washington is also in negotiations to star in this political thriller.

Cronenberg will direct from a script by Derek Brandt and Michael Haas, adapting from Robert Ludlum's 1979 book of the same name. The story centers on two rival cover agents, one American, one Soviet, who start working together to hunt down and eliminate members of a secret society called the Matarese that has ties all the way up to the top of the American government.

No production schedule was released for the film.
