According to Variety, David Fincher is going to direct Columbia Pictures' chess film Pawn Sacrifice.

The director has attached himself to the life story of American chess icon Bobby Fischer. The film chronicles the events leading up to his famous world championship match against Boris Spassky.

Tobey Maguire is producing this film.

In addition to this, Fincer is looking at helming Columbia's literary adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Scott Rudin is producing this project. The film is based on Stieg Larsson's bestseller.

Pawn Sacrifice has been in development for quite some time. Screenwriter Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things) has turned in a screenplay that caught the attention of many A-list directors.

Columbia is eager to work Fincher again. They recently teamed up for the Facebook film The Social Network.
