SCI FI Wire caught up with Batman Begins screenwriter David Goyer, who said that he is working on an updated version of David Cronenberg's classic Sci-fi horror film Scanners. Goyer will expand on the 1981 original and place it in the context of current events. "One of the ... things that's also great about Scanners was the fact that Cronenberg embeds so much subtext into his stories ... So we've tried to keep the spirit of that and kind of transpose that into a post-9/11 world, if you can imagine what scanners would be involved in in that kind of world. That's what we're attempting to do here."
In the original low-budget movie, a couple of hundred telepathic and telekinetic humans, led by the particularly cunning and powerful Revok (Michael Ironside), plotted to take over the Earth, in some cases using their powers to literally blow people's minds.
Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II) will be directing the film to be released by Dimension Films. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2008.
