Almost exactly one year after the iconic Haunted Elevator Saturday Night Live sketch introduced the world to Tom Hanks' delightfully weird character David S. Pumpkins, NBC has released a trailer for The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special. The half-hour special will debut Saturday, October 28 at 11:30 PM, in lieu of a new episode of SNL, followed by SNL Presents: Halloween at 12 AM. SNL will get back to its regular programming next week with a new episode hosted by Larry David with musical guest Miley Cyrus, but this year, the sketch comedy series celebrates Halloween by bringing back one of its most surprisingly memorable characters in recent years, David S. Pumpkins.

The animated Halloween special was first announced last month, when it was revealed that Tom Hanks will voice David S. Pumpkins, Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan will return to voice Pumpkins' skeleton assistants. The trailer gives us a new glimpse at all three of these characters in live action, with the skeletons wishing fans a Happy Halloween, before Pumpkins inexplicably decides to spank them, while keeping his trademark grin firmly in place. The skeletons announce the special's premiere date and time, before the footage transitions to the animated version of David S. Pumpkins, who delivers his now-iconic catch phrase: "I'm David Pumpkins. Any questions?"

The original announcement from last month revealed that Tom Hanks will appear as his character on camera during the beginning of the special, before it transitions to the animated special, with Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage coming aboard to voice an unknown role. The creators of the sketch, writers Mikey Day, Bobby Moynihan and Streeter Seidell will also have unspecified voiceover roles, while also serving as writers and producers of the half-hour special. SNL creator Lorne Michaels will also serve as executive producer of the special, which is a production of Broadway Video in association with SNL Studios.

Bento Box will provide the animation for the special, which is set in a small suburban town on All Hallows' Eve. The special centers on David Pumpkins and his skeleton sidekicks who show a young boy and his sister the true meaning of Halloween, answering none of their questions along the way. Bento Box has provided the animation for current TV shows such as Fox's Bob's Burgers, Comedy Central's Legends of Chamberlain Heights and Disney XD's Future-Worm!, along with Fox's Allen Gregory, Murder Police and Bordertown, Comedy Central's Brickelberry and more.

There will also be another, much different animated Halloween special tomorrow night, Michael Jackson's Halloween, which debuts on CBS at 8 PM. That special features a voice cast that includes Christine Baranski, Kiersey Clemons, Alan Cumming, George Eads, Brad Garrett, Lucy Liu, Jim Parsons and Lucas Till, many of whom star on CBS shows themselves. It will be interesting to see how each of these specials stack up against each other in the ratings, but until then, take a look at the first trailer for The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special, courtesy of Saturday Night Live YouTube, along with the original "Haunted Elevator" sketch that started it all.
