20th Century Fox has decided to move their sci-fi action sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes up one week from July 18, 2014 to July 11, 2014, the same date currently occupied by Fast & Furious 7. Despite the production being indefinitely delayed last week, following the untimely death of franchise star Paul Walker, Universal Pictures is still planning on keeping the July 11, 2014 date for now.

The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes release shift reportedly happened so 20th Century Fox can put some distance between itself and two potential blockbusters opening on July 25, Hercules: The Thracian Wars, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jupiter Ascending, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. It's possible that Fox is also banking on Universal eventually moving Fast & Furious 7 out of July 11, since it isn't immediately clear when production will resume, or how much shooting is left on the sequel. However, for now, Universal is sticking to its original release plan.

The release date shift leaves Disney's animated sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue as the only movie currently opening on July 18, 2014.
