As has been rumored for some time now, DC Films president Walter Hamada has left Warner Bros. Discovery. As reported by Deadline, Hamada has parted ways with the studio after 15 years in an executive position and four years after he took over the DC Films banner. While Hamada’s time as President of DC Films has seen the release of many high-grossing movies, it has also failed to deliver the kind of interconnected universe that Warner Bros. Discovery wants to build.

Hamada is the fifth executive to leave Warner Bros. Discovery in the last few months since boss David Zaslav reshuffled both his team and the priority of the studio and brands such as DC. While a host of DC projects have fallen by the wayside, the focus for the future is on big-screen movies, and that will be happening under new management when Zaslav manages to find “his Kevin Feige.” Of course, that in itself will be no small feat, but it looks like whoever does take up the position will have Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson with them every step of the way after the actor revealed recently that he wants to be an advisor to the DCEU as a whole.

When Hamada took over the DC Films brand, it was in the wake of the disappointment of Justice League, and although he had had ups and downs since then, the DC franchise certainly seems to be finding its feet with some big projects already set up for the next few years. How the change of command will impact the DCEU’s future is unclear, but it will not be an easy task for Hamada’s successor.

With a change of management usually comes a change in direction, scope and focus. Under Hamada, there have been a number of DC movies put into production, and five of them are heading to cinemas soon — unless there are any last-minute Batgirl style cancelations, that is. Black Adam is certainly releasing this week, of that there is no doubt. Next year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Shazam: Fury of the Gods and The Flash, also can be assumed to be on very solid ground. The last movie that is deep in post-production is Blue Beetle, a movie that was originally heading to HBO Max but somehow managed to avoid the chopping block. As there is currently no idea how Blue Beetle fits with the existing DCEU, this is the only movie that could still be on a less steady footing on the release schedule.

There are other DC projects also underway in various early stages, from sequels to The Batman, Joker and Constantine, which will see Keanu Reeves jumping back into his DC role of John Constantine, to TV shows such as the animated Harley Quinn series and Peacemaker season 2, which is just one of the projects currently in the works from James Gunn.

All in all, a change is as good as a rest, and it is clear that Warner Bros. Discovery has rested long enough, with only two major releases recently hitting theaters. Now we will see how a change at the top filters down into the output of the studio’s biggest franchise.
