The DC Universe is full of interesting characters, both in comics and cinema, that are captivating and exciting to watch. They have heroes and villains with tragic backstories, blurred and ambiguous moralities, and some characters that are evil simply because they can be. There’s a wide range of stories to be interested in with diverse sets of characters. DC truly does have something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of live-action stories or animated tv shows.

What people don’t always appreciate about the DC characters is how well done so many of the female characters are – the heroes, the villains, and those in between have such diverse stories and intentions. While fans enjoy seeing their favourite female characters brought to the screen in various styles, generations, and productions, some just don’t get the time to shine as they deserve.

Here are a few DC girls we’d like to see more of in future projects.

Huntress: Bring Mary Elizabeth Winstead Back to Screen

Huntress played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Birds of Prey
Warner Bros. Pictures

After the release of Birds of Prey, several female DC characters blew up in popularity. This woman-led movie showcased a lot of talent and a lot of cool characters that hadn’t been seen much before. One of the fan favourites was Huntress, a skilled marksman and fighter trying to avenge the murder of her family. She doesn’t have superpowers yet fights as fiercely as Black Canary or the cunning yet unhinged Harley Quinn.

Huntress was funny and lovable while still being tough and complemented the other characters incredibly well. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has said she’d love to play the character again, and with more DC movies in the works already, there’s a good chance she could make an appearance. Huntress is an exciting character to watch fight and bond with other characters, and she definitely deserves to be seen in future projects and have her story and development expanded.

Hawkgirl: A Relatable Yet Mythical Story

Warner Bros. Television

While Hawkgirl hasn’t been seen much on screen, some fans might remember her from the tv show Legends of Tomorrow, which aired on The CW. The series was sadly canceled but is still remembered fondly by fans for its unique stories and diverse characters.

It would be fascinating to see more of Hawkgirl on screen, as she is the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess searching for her lover across several lifetimes. Her story and powers incorporate many neat mythological elements, which would be visually exciting and for the sake of the plot. Hawkgirl’s story also shares a lot about love and humanity and existence – something that audiences will be able to connect to and question as they watch her.

Zatanna Zatara: A Frequent Struggle Between Good and Evil

`Zatanna Zatara
DC Comics

The popular animated series Young Justice featured a myriad of great characters, including the underrated Zatanna Zatara. She is a magician just like her father but can do much more than simple card tricks. By speaking backward incantations, she can unleash a lot of power, making her a fascinating character to watch as she often struggles with using and abusing her powers, often teetering on the edge of good and evil.

Fans are thrilled now that a Zatanna movie is finally in the works, but very few details are known about it as of yet. The character of Zatanna holds a lot of promise for the big screen, and hopefully, this upcoming movie will open the doors to her being featured in more projects by DC.

Poison Ivy: Relevant Stories of Nature vs. Man

Poison Ivy DC Comics
DC Comics

Poison Ivy is one of those characters that has popped up time and time again but never really gotten the chance to develop. She’s had better treatment from the Harley Quinn series, which just got renewed for another season, where she features as one of the lead characters.

Poison Ivy is a unique character for many reasons, but mostly because of her passions and motivations. Before she gained her powers, she was a botanist and wanted nothing more than to live a happy life with her plants and help heal the natural world. However, she is slighted and disappointed by humanity time and time again, eventually turning to a life of crime to seek revenge on those who have wronged her.

While she is notorious for her violence, she does have a sympathetic side. She doesn’t harm those who don’t deserve it and even helps do some good when teaming up with The Birds of Prey. Her story and character arc are complex and interesting and should be continued and furthered in the DC universe. She carries themes in her story about protecting nature that are relevant today.

Artemis Crock: Bring the Comics Version to Life

DC's Artemis Crock - Young Justice
Warner Bros. Television Distribution

Also seen in Young Justice was Artemis Crock, a talented fighter and marksman. She had a compelling story in the animated series but was portrayed differently from how Artemis Crock is in the comics. They made her a hero associated with Green Arrow instead of a villain raised by villainous parents. The series made her part of the Justice League when her character had been written as their adversary.

Artemis has a lot of skills and an intriguing family life, but not much of her true self has been seen on screen by audience members. Seeing more of her in future DC projects would allow her story to be told more accurately and provide an opportunity to see what her character is truly capable of. She’s a riveting character that would entice viewers if she was truly given a chance.

The DC universe does a wonderful job with its characters in general, even though it doesn’t always succeed. The range and diversity of the characters keep things fresh and exciting and show that there’s no shortage of stories to tell. But the female characters often get overlooked or overshadowed, and they deserve better. As DC progresses in improving its projects, there is plenty of hope for the women of these stories to finally get the chance and recognition they’ve waited so long for.
