DC's League of Super Pets, DC Comics and Warner Brothers upcoming summer animated flick, is a new, unique direction for the DC Extended Universe movies. A new direction the studio hopes will impress critics and audience alike, with the release date of the movie up from late 2022 to the middle of the summer on July 29th, taking the place of the highly anticipated Black Adam.

Led by the latest fan-favorite comedic duo of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (playing Krypto the Superdog) and Kevin Hart (playing Ace the Bathound), previously seen in the Jumanji films, League of Super Pets will follow a group of super-powered pets owned by each member of the Justice League, as the animals attempt to rescue their owners from the evil clutches of genius billionaire, Lex Luthor (played by Marc Maron). Similar in style and plot to the popular animated kid’s film The Secret Life of Pets, this new DC action piece should get more fans to flock to theaters for Warner Brothers' upcoming projects late this year and early 2023, along with introducing a younger generation to famed superheroes.

Along with an animated Justice League team that consists of Superman, a Christian Bale-esque Batman (voiced by Keanu Reeves), a Cyborg whose design comes from the eighties, a Jason Momoa-inspired Aquaman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, and a newer Green Lantern in Jessica Cruz to complement all of these pets, it’d only be fitting to go over the origins of each of the Super Pets that star in the upcoming movie.

Krypto the Superdog

Krypto, created by writer Otto Binder and artist Curt Swan, first appeared in 1955’s Action Comics #210. His origin is one of the more tragic in comic book history. While preparing for the imminent doom of the planet Krypton, Jor-El (father of Superman) was testing rockets that would allow him to send living creatures, including his son, into outer space and to other planets.

In one of Jor-El’s tests, he used Krypto as a subject. Krypto was then sent into space, where his rocket was knocked off course, and he ended up drifting in space for years. Weirdly enough, the tale predates the sad real-life story of Laika the dog, the first living thing ever sent to space. Krypto luckily ended up on Earth with his former owner, who now is a grown adult. Thanks to the yellow sun and a bright red cape, Krypto was able to join Superman and the superfamily in helping to fight crime and injustice. He even had his own TV show, and is now sure to help make a great dog movie.

Ace The Bathound

DC League of Super Pets Ace Bathound
Warner Bros. Pictures

Appearing in the same year as Krypto, in Batman #92, Ace the Bathound was originally a lost dog that Batman and Robin found while on a case to rescue Ace’s owner, who was kidnapped by gang members. Due to the amount of “lost dog” announcements Bruce Wayne (Batman’s alter ego) put out, Batman became worried that people would make the connection of his identities if they saw Ace with Batman. With quick thinking, Batman created a hood in the shape of his own bat mask, and fitted it to Ace, now christened Ace the Bathound. Though well known, Ace hasn’t been seen in comics since the famous Batman: No Man’s Land storyline in the late nineties (one of the stories of inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises).

PB, the Pot Bellied Pig

Warner Bros. Pictures

PB, who will become Wonder Woman’s pet by the end of League of Super Pets, is a new creation for the film. In the comics, Wonder Woman’s animal sidekick is a species of flying kangaroo from Themyscira, who she names “Jumpa.” Jumpa is one of the oldest super pets, making her first appearance all the way back in 1942. As for why DC and Warner Brothers chose to go with PB instead of Jumpa is anybody's guess, though it should be fascinating to see the origin story of the bright-eyed Pig.

Merton the Turtle

Warner Bros. Pictures

Though the Flash has never officially had an animal sidekick in DC Comics Canon, there have been many variations of the Scarlet Speedster, one of which is Merton the Turtle, who will be the Flash’s pet in the new movie. The second-oldest super pet, appearing in 1944, Merton McSnurtle (full name) is most known as one of the members of the Zoo Crew, an animal-themed take on the Justice League who operate on Earth-C.

A turtle who has the powers of super-speed, irony apparent, Merton fights justice while wearing a costume that is identical to the first Flash, Jay Garrick. Whether that suit will be used in the movie is up in the air, but seeing a fast turtle is sure to delight any child.

Chip, The Squirrel

DC League of Super Pets Chip the Squirrel
Warner Bros. Pictures

Also known as Ch’p, Chip may be the only super pet who was actually their own hero, and not a sidekick, in the animated film. Originally appearing 1982’s Green Lantern #148, Chip was a resistance fighter who was to be executed on his home planet H’Iven, when a Guardian of the Universe (creators of the Green Lantern Corps), stepped in and offered him a Green Lantern Ring. Though it is apparent that this incarnation of Chip is going to be much different (as shown in the photo above), he’ll still have some element of Green Lantern when he becomes the pet of Jessica Cruz.

Though there are seven members of the Justice League featured in promotional images, so far only five super-pets have been revealed, leaving Aquaman and Cyborg as the only heroes without a super-pet sidekick. Whether the last two will be shown in the film, or not at all, is yet to be seen. The five pets featured in the film all have their own, unique origin that is sure to be influencing each actor’s take on their respective pets. DC’s League of Super Pets to be released on June 29th, 2022.
